BMW rules out launching an M4 Gran Coupé

Gran Coupé 15

BMW will not repeat the move of the M6 Gran Coupé with the equivalent 4 Series. This was confirmed last week by the head of sales of the M GmbH division of the German manufacturer, Jörg Bartels, during the presentation of the M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé to Australian media. In his statements, the executive acknowledged that the possibility of developing an M4 Gran Coupé was considered at the time, but the idea has been ruled out.

The main reason behind this decision is that its series production would pose too many difficulties. The 4 Series Gran Coupé is manufactured at the plant BMW has in Dingolfing, while the M3 comes off the assembly lines of its centre in Regensburg and the M4 from the plant in Munich.

Although the Gran Coupé shares many elements with the other two bodystyles, it is not profitable for BMW to adapt a third production centre to manufacture the mechanics and the structural components specific used in the M versions. Furthermore, the M4 Gran Coupé would not have fitted the production forecasts for the M3 and M4 that had been calculated.

As for possible rivals, Audi will also not have an RS5 Sportback in its range, so the M4 Gran Coupé would have had nothing to compete against. For now, the brand whose five-door, coupé-styled saloon is the most powerful is Audi, since the S5 Sportback, with its 3.0 TFSI of 333 CV, outperforms the BMW 435i Gran Coupé of 306 CV.
