The Bavarian manufacturer announced a couple of months ago that it would present a new concept at the German show, and as we expected, the prototype marks the future production trend that the company will apply to its green cars; one of the closest examples we will be able to see in Frankfurt is the 320d.

Without a doubt, BMW draws on the experience gained throughout its entire history in its EfficientDynamics programme to develop attractive cars with sporty inclinations, which not only appeal for their design but also because they improve vehicle efficiency through the use of new technologies.

The concept embodies the idea of a lightweight coupe with seating for four; its interior is fitted with a computer tasked with continuously monitoring driving conditions, consumables and even suggesting a better route to reduce time behind the wheel.

And if we take into account that the hybrid engine delivers a maximum output of 356 CV, the car would be one of the most interesting options on the market, if a model with similar characteristics ever reaches production.

The exterior stands out completely because it uses a series of parts that help soften its look, reduce weight and offer an unmatched level of aerodynamic efficiency.

The front pillars are designed to guide air along the entire contour of the car and therefore the sports car enjoys adequate cooling; meanwhile the rear elements such as the air ducts, the mudguard and even the leaf-shaped lights are used to further minimise turbulence and drag.

But the aerodynamic tricks don’t end there, since the underside of the prototype is flat and the main goal is supposedly to reduce frictional drag; furthermore, the front section is equipped with active shutters that regulate airflow as the radiator requires.

Behind the shutters there are small air ducts that connect directly to the front wheels, which according to BMW provides greater stability to the wheels.

Finally, the wheels were also designed with aerodynamics in mind, so their individual spokes cut cleanly through the air, reducing turbulence despite their large size, 21 inches.
