Ferrari offers a battery replacement programme for its plug-in hybrid models

The electrification of the latest models from the Italian supercar manufacturer has forced the company to take this decision in response to the concerns expressed by some of its customers

The prestigious Italian sports car maker has launched a battery replacement programme for its plug-in hybrid models. The aim of this programme is to offer its customers the option of replacing the battery in their sports cars up to twice, thereby helping to preserve the vehicle’s residual value.

Vehicles from Ferrari are not like any ordinary car that any of us might drive to get to work or go on holiday. When the wealthy customers of the Italian firm buy a Ferrari, they are genuinely making a financial investment and therefore expect its value not to plummet over the years as happens with any other conventional vehicle.

Although plug-in hybrids run largely on their internal combustion engine, the battery remains an expensive component that gradually degrades with use. Over time, the battery’s usable capacity is reduced, which not only cuts electric range but can also affect the vehicle’s overall performance. In this way, a battery with a certain level of degradation that cannot supply enough energy to the electric motor will inevitably affect the vehicle’s residual value.

Customers of Ferrari don’t have to worry about a thing

With Ferrari’s new battery replacement programme, the Italian manufacturer offers what could be described as a warranty extension that provides for replacing the batteries at fixed intervals. Thus, the Hybrid Warranty Extension Programme officially extends the current warranty from five to eight years. So, if any problem arises, Ferrari will replace the battery at no additional cost to the customer.

On the other hand, the Power Hybrid Additional Programme extends the warranty on all major drivetrain components (including the battery) up to a total of 16 years after the first eight years of the initial warranty extension.

These two programmes apply to the SF90 Stradale, the convertible SF90 Spider, the performance versions SD90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, as well as the 296 GTB and 296 GTS, which are produced in significantly larger numbers.

It is not yet known, however, whether Ferrari will extend this programme to its first electric model, which is due to launch next year. Finally, it should be mentioned that the battery cells for Ferrari’s plug-in hybrids are supplied by SK On.
