Finally! The Toyota GR Yaris debuts a new exhaust system signed by Akrapovič

The Japanese hot hatch can now boast a delicious roar and more power and less weight thanks to its new Akrapovič exhausts

Toyota GR Yaris Akrapovič

The Toyota GR Yaris was unveiled at the end of 2020, promising to be the perfect sporty compact thanks to its 261 CV and 360 Nm of peak torque under the bonnet, its all-wheel-drive system and its wonderful handling, thanks to several improvements to its chassis and tuning.

However, something that didn’t quite convince us about this otherwise well-rounded product was its subdued sound. Although it was quite sporty, we missed a bit more bite to round off the driving experience of this great car. This is where the specialist Akrapovič has stepped in with a solution.

More power, torque and lightness

The renowned exhaust system manufacturer, based in Slovenia, has just presented its new exhaust kit made of titanium, consisting of two exhaust tailpipes with a design very similar to the standard ones and three resonators that emit a crackle that makes your mouth water.

The new exhaust line does not start from the manifolds, but from the mid-section down to the silencer at the end, eliminating the standard particulate filter. This allows the car to gain 18.4 CV and 21.8 Nm of additional torque, and saves 5.6 kilograms in weight thanks to its titanium construction. With all of this, the GR Yaris delivers 280 CV and 381 Nm of peak torque.

As you can imagine, this exhaust line, from its mid-section onwards, removes the standard particulate filter, so the GR Yaris’s emissions will not comply with homologated levels. It is therefore only a toy for the track or for those willing to risk a fine for driving on public roads in a non-permitted way.

Solutions for everyone

To address this, Akrapovič also offers only the rear section, which, although it doesn’t increase power by 18 CV, does add 13 CV and, if it can be homologated, allows the car to be driven on public roads with full legality, also improving torque by 13 Nm and reducing weight by 4.7 kg.

To finally win our hearts, Akrapovič has published a video on its YouTube channel in which we can hear the spectacular cold start of the 1.6 turbo three-cylinder and its crackles on downshifts, which turn braking into an absolute addiction.
