Geneva Motor Show 2012: Mitsubishi

The main news from Mitsubishi in Geneva has been the new Outlander, with hybrid technology, the world’s first plug-in 4WD.

On a sober stand, with really few models, we came across Mitsubishi. We already knew of Mitsubishi’s intentions to make the Outlander plug-in, so it was no surprise when we came across a completely new Outlander with plug-in technology that incorporates some design details from the PX-MiEV concept, especially in the grille and front end, similar to that concept. But what makes it stand out from the rest is that this Outlander has become the world’s first plug-in extended-range 4×4.

Inside, the Outlander proves very capable of carrying five occupants, but we see that among the optional extras there will be a third row, which will provide space for two more passengers. The finishes and materials are good overall, although somewhat better materials could have been used. The central screen dominates the dashboard, as we have seen in almost all the models at the show.

We are told there are two operating modes: one uses the two electric motors to propel the car, while the other mode deactivates one of the electric motors and uses the petrol or diesel engine (2 litres for the petrol, a 2.2 for the diesel). However, there is also the possibility of driving in a parallel hybrid mode where the electric assistance tries to reduce fuel consumption.

The other models shown were the new Pajero, the Colt, the L200 or the electric i-MiEV, models already known but which have contributed little to Mitsubishi in Geneva.
