Great Wall Motor drops its two brands in Europe and unifies them under a new name

Although it arrived in the European market with two brands, the Chinese multinational is set to simplify its range by bringing those two brands together under a single one, GWM.

The arrival of cars from China in Europe is unstoppable, and brands are managing to carve out an important niche in the market. But sometimes the executives of these brands have not gauged well the impact of the brand name and, once established, have been forced to change the name, even if it is for marketing reasons.

In the case of Great Wall Motor, two of its brands were being sold, ORA and Wey. But the Chinese multinational has decided to drop these brands and has opted to unify the two under a single one, GWM. The models sold so far will keep their names, although they will now have a numerical designation.

New names

The names of the existing models are going to change in part. One of the first to reach the region has been the Ora Funky Cat, which will now be called the Ora 03. As for the two models sold under the Wey brand, the Coffee 01 and Coffee 02 will be renamed GWM Wey 05 and GWM Wey 03. In this way, the range is simplified and easier to understand.

Unifying the brands will make the company more visible and, although they are two different lines, it will have a greater presence. The Ora models will continue to be a line of retro-futuristic electric cars, as shown by the model already on the road. The Wey line will continue to offer premium plug-in hybrid models, although the addition of another model to the range, which would keep the code started by these, is not ruled out.

This is not the only news Great Wall Motor will present, since it is planned to join the Chinese brands that want to produce some of their models on European soil and has in mind to open a production plant in a European country, without specifying which one.

That said, given its interest in quickly positioning itself in the increasingly prized European electric car market, we will not have to wait long to learn the location of this European factory. Among the countries named are Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
