Interested in buying a used SUV? These are the best options

If you want to buy a used SUV, with low mileage and you don’t want to spend more than 20,000 euros, we show you 10 options you should keep in mind.

The SUV segment is the most fashionable right now, something reflected in its sales figures. Vehicles classified as SUVs already account for a third of all sales in Spain.

On the other hand, the used vehicle market is also enjoying a really positive trend in recent months. These already make up a significant slice of the Spanish market, and 7 out of 10 Spaniards would seriously consider buying a used car.

Therefore, if we combine the good momentum in SUV sales with the boom in the used vehicle market, the result is this article we bring you. We present ten good options if you are thinking about buying a used SUV.

They are all different models: there are examples from premium brands, mass-market brands, plug-in hybrids and LPG. Despite all these differences, the common denominator we have set is a maximum price when looking for options to buy a used SUV: up to 20,000 euros. In addition, we have set another requirement: that all the models are no more than 4 years old, meaning they were all registered from 2015 onwards.

This is no coincidence, because by buying a car no older than this, the most likely outcome is that it will come with its first MOT freshly passed, and you can forget about taking it in again for at least two more years.

Hyundai Tucson 2016

Hyundai TucsonThe Korean SUV is one of the main stars of the Hyundai range. It has also been a sales success, so we can find a good number of units in good condition on the used market.

If you are looking for a Hyundai Tucson, its mileage rarely exceeds 50,000 kilometres, at prices ranging between 17,000 and 20,000 euros. Obviously, this price range depends on whether they have more or less mileage and on the equipment of the car you choose.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2013

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVAfter testing the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV we can say that this car has been one of those successes a brand can have. It is the first model on the market with plug-in hybrid technology, so it enjoys all the advantages of having the ZERO label stuck to the windscreen.

The version we found at that price is the one Mitsubishi launched in 2013, and it has a fully electric range of 50 kilometres. The combustion engine, a 2.0 petrol with 121 horsepower, alternates its operation with the two electric motors (one per axle), each capable of delivering 82 horsepower.

The units we have found are priced between 18,000 and 20,000 euros, are from 2015, and show odometer readings approaching 100,000 kilometres.

Dacia Duster 2017

Dacia DusterThe Romanian brand Dacia is a fixture when we make lists of cheap SUVs. Moreover, despite its price, its products have improved over the years, so these cars now offer features similar to those of brands not considered “low cost”.

The model we propose has become a real bestseller on the Spanish market, so if we look for a used Dacia Duster, we can browse through the wide variety of units available to choose the one we like best.

Almost all the examples we have found are KM.0, although the biggest price difference depends on whether the model we choose is first or second generation (though they are always registered from 2016 onwards). Therefore, we can find a Dacia Duster in a price range between 11,000 and 18,000 euros, depending also on the trim level of the chosen unit.

BMW X1 2015

BMW X1The BMW X1 debuted on the market in 2009 and was the brand’s answer to compete in the small SUV segment. It is also a very attractive option if you want a used premium SUV without spending a fortune.

Its space is enough for four people and their luggage to travel reasonably comfortably. When buying this car, we must bear in mind what we are buying. It is not a supercar, but if there is one thing we must be clear about, it is that maintaining a BMW X1 is not the same as maintaining a Dacia Duster.

If this is not a problem for you, you can buy a car with attractive design and premium-quality materials. We have found units of the BMW X1 registered in 2015 with mileage around 80,000 kilometres, starting at 18,000 euros.

Kia Sportage 2016

Kia SportageKia is one of the brands that has evolved the most over the years, with the Kia Sportage being one of the main pillars of its range in terms of sales. The Korean SUV is a very worthwhile option if we want to buy a used SUV and do not want the budget to exceed 20,000 euros.

On the used market, the used Kia Sportage offers a good variety of units with prices ranging from 15,000 to 19,000 euros depending on mileage and trim level. All of them are registered from 2015 onwards and have mileage ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 kilometres.

Peugeot 3008 2017

Peugeot 3008The second-generation Peugeot 3008 represented a revolution in the design language of the lion brand. Its sharp shapes left no one indifferent, so it is a car you either love or hate. The same goes for the i-cockpit it introduced, with a very small steering wheel and a very high instrument cluster that you have to get used to, although once the adjustment is made, it can be really comfortable.

If you like everything we have mentioned above, the Peugeot 3008 is a model very worth considering in the SUV segment. We have found a large number of units with less than 40,000 kilometres starting at 18,500 euros. As always, prices can rise depending on the engine and trim you choose.

SsangYong Tivoli GLP 2015

SsangYong TivoliOne of the great unknowns of the segment is the SsangYong Tivoli. Moreover, the version we specifically looked for is the LPG version, that is, the petrol and gas option of the small Korean SUV. Cars that have had an LPG kit installed are a great option, so here we explain 8 things about LPG cars that you probably don’t know.

The LPG SsangYong Tivoli has a 47-litre petrol tank and another for LPG that holds 30 kilos. Thanks to this, it can cover up to 1,100 kilometres using petrol and gas. It also has the advantage of carrying the ECO label from the DGT, so it can circulate without problems on days when the anti-pollution protocol is in force.

We have found some units of a used LPG SsangYong Tivoli with less than 30,000 kilometres, from 2016, at a price of around 15,000 euros, making it a very reasonable option given what you pay versus what the car offers.

Mazda CX-3 2018

Mazda CX-3The Mazda CX-3 is not one of the first models that comes to mind when we think about buying a used small SUV. However, this should not be the case, as it is one of the best options in terms of handling, design and finish quality.

The small crossover from Mazda is the ideal model for anyone who wants an SUV for getting around the city, with a reasonable boot (350 litres) and something different from what we usually see.

We have found KM.0 units of the Mazda CX-3, from 2018, the year it received a restyling, at prices starting from 19,000 euros.

Mini Cooper D Countryman 2017

Mini Cooper DThe Mini Cooper Countryman is the “coolest” model on this list. Its design is attractive, it has room for family travel and, in addition, its finish and build quality are typical of the premium segment.

The version we found within the price range we are looking for is the used Mini Cooper D Countryman, that is, the diesel version of the British crossover. It has a 1.6-litre engine with 112 horsepower and a modest homologated consumption of 4.2 litres.

The units we have found on the used market have less than 50,000 kilometres, are registered between 2015 and 2017 (pre-restyling), and their prices start from 15,000 euros.

Seat Ateca 2016

Seat AtecaThe Seat Ateca was the first model from the Spanish brand to jump on the SUV bandwagon, being the pioneer of the manufacturer’s crossover range (after it came the Arona and the Tarraco).

The Seat SUV is one of the best options on the market for those thinking about buying a used SUV, and proof of this is the significant sales volume it has achieved. The main consequence of this commercial success is that we now find a huge range of units on the used market.

There are used Seat Ateca for all tastes and colours, but we have focused on KM.0 units and cars registered from 2018 onwards. Those that meet these two filters range between 17,000 and 20,000 euros, depending on their equipment and engine.
