Is the range of the Porsche Taycan really sufficient for a long journey?

The Porsche Taycan is capable of covering 1,111 kilometres in a single day, but… at what cost? We analyse the electric challenge that sets out to dispel doubts about range and fast charging

Electric cars still face scepticism about their range and their ability to handle long journeys. To counter these doubts, Porsche organised the “1,111 km Challenge”, in which the Taycan had to cover more than 1,000 kilometres in a single day, using exclusively its Porsche Charging Lounge network of charging stations.

Is the Taycan really capable of maintaining its range and charging times under these demanding conditions? Here we analyse the technical details and the results of this test, which promises to redefine perceptions of electric vehicles.

1,111 kilometres in a single day

The challenge began in Koblach (Austria) and covered a route through Germany, with stops at charging stations in Bingen, Würzburg and Ingolstadt, before returning to the starting point. Each leg tested the estimated range of 600 km (according to WLTP) and the efficiency of the Taycan’s fast-charging system.

Routes and strategies:

  1. First leg (450 km): From Koblach to Bingen. In cold temperatures, rain and traffic jams, the Taycans showed an average consumption of 21.5 kWh/100 km, making the most of the 97 kWh usable capacity of their batteries.
  2. Intermediate charging: The teams adjusted their charging strategies, ranging between 55% and 92% initial charge, depending on their traffic and consumption expectations.
  3. Final stage (300 km): With average speeds above 100 km/h, the cars completed the challenge in record times.

Performance and efficiency

The Taycan excels in the field of fast charging:

  • Maximum charging power: Up to 325 kW, the leader in its segment.
  • Charging from 10% to 80%: Completed in 18 minutes with the new Performance Plus battery.
  • Total consumption: 320 kWh in the challenge, equivalent to €125 of total cost for a team, thanks to free access to the Porsche Charging Service.

By comparison, a car with a combustion engine would have spent twice as much fuel on a similar route.

The P3 Charging Index and the Porsche infrastructure

The Taycan leads the P3 Charging Index 2024, thanks to its balance between peak and sustained power. It maintains a charging power above 300 kW until reaching a 60% state of charge, which significantly improves charging times on long journeys.

In addition, the Porsche Charging Lounge network includes stations with 400 kW Alpitronic chargers and amenities such as rest areas. The network is currently planned to expand to 40 locations across Europe.

Electric or not? The question remains open

While the challenge highlights the Taycan’s performance and efficiency, it also shows that strategic stops and route conditions considerably influence electric driving. Can an electric car be as practical as a combustion car on long journeys?

With leading performance and a growing infrastructure, the Porsche Taycan reinforces its position as a pioneer in electric mobility. However, challenges such as limited access to charging stations and external variables such as weather remain points of discussion for sceptics.

In conclusion, is the Taycan’s range sufficient? The numbers support its capability, but the debate over the long-term viability of electric cars remains open.
