Iveco celebrates Pegaso's 70th anniversary with a limited edition of the Iveco Stralis
Pegaso Comet
Iveco pays tribute to the Spanish company Pegaso, on what would have been its 70th birthday, by launching a special version of the Stralis. The Pegaso Limited Edition will consist of two different models of the Stralis XP, each with 70 units. Pegaso is mainly recognised for manufacturing trucks, but it also built other vehicles such as buses, military trucks, vans and even a few car models.
It was in 1946 that the company ENASA (Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones) was created by the INI (Instituto Nacional de Industria). Work immediately began on the large Madrid factory, whose first construction phase was completed in 1955. It acquired the facilities and designs of Hispano Suiza, so that the last truck designed by that company, known as the 66-G, became the Pegaso I.
Pegaso introduced technological innovations that benefited trucks, cars and buses. The Z-207 Barajas of 1955, the first truck built at the new Madrid factory, had a V-6 aluminium engine and independent front suspension. In 1989 the Barcelona Motor Show saw the presentation of the first concept truck in the European industry, the SOLO 500. The prototype was equipped with GPS, rear-view cameras, proximity radar and other driver assistance systems. At the time they were a great technological novelty, but today it is entirely normal to find them fitted as standard on the vast majority of current cars.
Pegaso Z 102
The first city bus with a rear transverse engine was a Pegaso design. Furthermore, in terms of cars, the Spanish brand made history with legendary models such as the Z-102, which featured a four-camshaft V-8 engine, independent suspension on all four wheels and a rear-axle gearbox, ahead of its time.
The Spanish brand also took part with its trucks in the 1989 and 1990 European Truck Racing Championship. Thanks to the four victories achieved at the Jarama Circuit, the TRONER Jarama special series was produced. Another major sporting event in which Pegaso took part was the Paris-Dakar Rally, where it raced trucks based on military versions.
Pegaso’s total production, from 1946 to 1991, the year in which the brand was acquired by Iveco, reached 405,000 units. By 2008, under the name IvecoPegaso, the million-unit mark had been reached.
The Pegaso Limited Edition based on the Stralis XP will be divided between two different models, one in white (70 units) and another in blue (70 units), and will be equipped with engines producing 510 and 570 CV. Besides the exterior paint, they are distinguished by visible external and internal elements that permanently evoke and recall the Pegaso emblem.
