Kawasaki takes a giant leap and unveils a motorcycle prototype that runs on hydrogen
The Japanese company has unveiled a hydrogen-powered motorcycle, presented so that enthusiasts can see its capabilities for themselves.

The world of sustainable mobility has its sights set on hydrogen as a way to efficiently eliminate fossil fuels. The problem with this kind of technology is the shortage of hydrogen and of a practical refuelling infrastructure. Even so, manufacturers keep working to present models that could be viable in the medium term. And not only trucks and cars, but motorcycles too.
Kawasaki has just presented a model that will run on hydrogen, although it will not be a motorcycle with a hydrogen fuel cell. Instead, the combustion engine has been adapted to run on this fuel, in a similar way to how it works with petrol.

The work was done on a Ninja H2, which has been modified to run on hydrogen. The engine has been changed so that it accepts this fuel. Hydrogen tanks have also been added to store the fuel and feed the 1.0-litre four-cylinder engine that powers the motorcycle.

In addition, it has been fitted with a hydrogen fuel supply system. These components are located at the rear and look like rigid panniers, so the vehicle’s appearance does not suffer much from these additions. Hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour, so polluting emissions are eliminated completely.
This hydrogen-powered motorcycle was presented during the 8-hour Coca Cola Suzuka endurance race. The results were very satisfactory, and the brand assures that the sensations obtained when opening the throttle are very rewarding for the rider.
That said, this hydrogen-propelled motorcycle is a prototype and will not reach the market until, at the earliest, 2030. This date has been set for the launch, but the Japanese company warns that it may change, depending on the availability of charging points and of the hydrogen itself intended for automotive use.
