LPG is still of interest… and these are the 5 best-selling LPG cars in 2022

The Dacia Sandero is the undisputed leader among LPG cars sold so far this year, a technology that continues to attract interest over petrol and diesel.

Cheap kilometres. Or at least cheaper than with traditional fuels, petrol and diesel, despite the rise in fuel prices. That is what LPG cars promise… and they deliver. Moreover, another selling point of LPG cars is that, just like self-charging hybrids, they receive the ECO label from the DGT.

LPG is attractive

It is true that LPG has gone up, and by a lot. From about 0.70 euros per litre that was paid not long ago to an average of 0.95 euros per litre at the time of writing this article. But petrol 95 has risen in the same proportion, closing these days with an average price in Spain of 1.87 euros/litre; and diesel has risen even more, now at 1.91 euros/litre.

The result is that, although the engine consumes more when running on LPG than on petrol, the cost saving per kilometre taking fuel expenditure into account, which stands between 30 and 40% compared with petrol or diesel, still makes it worthwhile to turn to LPG. Furthermore, LPG cars are not much more expensive than petrol versions, they offer a large range (the LPG tank adds to the petrol tank), the network of service stations offering LPG is very extensive (almost 800 points) and refuelling is very simple.

What is more, LPG cars can run either on petrol or on LPG. This means that if you cannot refuel LPG, you can always use petrol mode until you reach a service station that supplies LPG. However, the range of LPG cars on our market is not very wide. Renault and Dacia are the brands that continue to bet most on this fuel.

Dacia and Renault, leaders in LPG

During the first four months of 2022, passenger car registrations with LPG in Spain have increased by 30% compared with the same period of the previous year. And these are the five best-selling LPG cars in the year-to-date total:

1.- Dacia Sandero LPG
2.- Dacia Duster LPG
3.- Dacia Jogger LPG
4.- Renault Clio LPG
5.- Renault Captur LPG

In all cases the technology is the same, called ECO-G, and based on the 1.0 TCe petrol 3-cylinder engine with turbocharger, which, with the LPG adaptation, announces a maximum output of 174 kW (100 CV). Compared with the petrol-engined versions, the price of the LPG variant with the same equipment is around 800 euros. A difference you will soon amortise through the better cost per kilometre, and which in many cases is justified simply by having the ECO label.
