The AMG family keeps on growing. The latest addition is a new member in the SUV range, the new AMG GLC 63, with a V8 and up to 500 CV.

The AMG family keeps on growing. The range of high-performance vehicles signed by the German specialist is becoming ever wider.

Add to this the boost that SUVs are getting in the vast majority of markets, and the result is the arrival of a new member of the AMG family, the new AMG GLC 63.

In Mercedes, the combination of SUV and sports car is not incompatible. This concept is increasingly fashionable, and not a few customers are asking for a versatile bodystyle vehicle with the sportiest performance possible. For them the second AMG version of the GLC has been created, following the arrival a few months ago of the AMG GLC 43.

The AMG 63 variant will be available in both bodystyles – standard and coupé – and, in addition, in two power levels: a plain AMG variant and another, even more special one, which adds the “S” suffix, for the most demanding customers who want the very best.

Aesthetically, the changes compared with any other GLC are obvious. The AMG styling is clear at the front, with a different bumper and wider front wings. In addition, these 63 versions enjoy exclusive alloy wheels, a redesigned rear bumper and a louder exhaust system.

Inside, the changes are not as noticeable, especially when compared with their less powerful siblings, the GLC 43. Notable, however, is the presence of specific instrumentation, a series of performance menus in the multimedia system and sports seats that provide greater lateral support. Contrasting elements are not lacking, such as the trim finished in carbon fibre.

Mechanically we are dealing with two powerhouses. The AMG GLC 63 are, in fact, the only SUVs in their segment to be fitted with a V8 engine, until now reserved for larger SUVs. The AMG GLC 63 feature the well-known 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from AMG, in two power levels: 476 and 510 CV. Both versions enjoy the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system and a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

The most powerful variant is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, thus outperforming, for example, an AMG GT Roadster, which takes 3.9 seconds to perform the same manoeuvre. Besides the engine, these versions enjoy a chassis tuned for the occasion, with adaptive air suspension, oversized brakes and self-locking and/or electronic differentials for better use of the power.
