With a starting price of €17,990 and 194 hp, the MG3 HYBRID+ promises to be a genuine alternative to established hybrids. Will it be enough to beat the Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio?
The British brand MG continues to gain ground in the Spanish market, and it proves it with the launch of its new MG3 HYBRID+, a city compact with an ECO label that combines power, efficiency and a surprisingly competitive price. In this test, we analyse its strengths and possible weaknesses against rivals such as the Renault Clio E-Tech, the Toyota Yaris 120H and the Suzuki Swift.

Design: attractive with nuances
The MG3 HYBRID+ catches the eye at first sight with a modern and bold design. Its front stands out with sharp lines, aggressive LED headlights and a blacked-out grille that reinforces its sporty character. On the side, the 18-inch alloy wheels and the gentle sloping roofline add dynamism, while the rear, although functional, is not as attractive as the rest of the car.
With dimensions of 4,113 mm long, 1,797 mm wide and 1,502 mm high, the MG3 firmly positions itself in the competitive B-segment. In addition, its 293-litre boot exceeds those of its main rivals, such as the Toyota Yaris (286 litres) or the Renault Clio E-Tech (254 litres), offering extra practicality.
Interior: correct and functional
The interior of the MG3 meets expectations for its segment. Although the quality of some materials, such as the piano-black trim and the steering wheel buttons, could be improved, the overall design is practical and comfortable. The seats stand out for their comfort, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel adds a modern touch, although it may not be to everyone’s taste.
In terms of technology, the MG3 comes as standard with a 10.25-inch central screen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (though not wireless) and a 7-inch instrument cluster screen. These elements, together with the flexible configuration of the cup holders, contribute to a modern and functional experience.
Hybrid engine: surprising power
The MG3 HYBRID+ positions itself as the most powerful hybrid in its category, with combined output of 194 hp. Its powertrain includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 102 hp, accompanied by two electric motors: one with 136 hp as the main drive unit and another acting as a generator. This combination allows the MG3 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h.
Although its urban driving is agile and smooth thanks to the electric motor, on the open road performance can suffer when the battery runs out, leaving the 102 hp combustion engine somewhat short in certain situations.
Consumption and driving modes
In our 225-kilometre test, with an average speed of 107 km/h, the MG3 recorded an average consumption of 5.4 l/100 km, an excellent figure for a hybrid of this power. It also offers three driving modes: Normal, Eco and Sport, and three levels of regenerative braking, although adjusting them from the screen is not very practical.
Price and comparison with rivals
The base price of the MG3 HYBRID+ is €19,990, which drops to €17,990 if financed through the brand, making it the most affordable hybrid on the market. It also includes a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty, a differentiating factor against rivals such as the Renault Clio E-Tech (from €23,600) or the Toyota Yaris 120H (from €24,900).
With its superior power, larger boot and efficient consumption, the MG3 represents a very competitive option, although those who value perceived quality and the reliability of established brands may prefer to pay the difference.
Conclusion: is it worth it?
And now I put a question to you. Would you choose this model with self-charging hybrid technology, cheaper, more powerful, with a 7-year warranty and an ECO label, or would you rather opt first for reliable brands such as Toyota or Renault in this case?
