Michelin Pilot Sport EV: the Michelin tyre designed specifically for high-performance electric cars

The new Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres are now available on the market, designed specifically for electric sports cars.

Tyre brands are adapting to the electrification of manufacturers, which is accelerating rapidly. Michelin, which has just launched its new Michelin e.Primacy, capable of saving fuel or increasing range in an electric car, now adds a new EV tyre to the Pilot Sport family: the Michelin Pilot Sport EV.

Drawing on Formula E experience and a collaboration with Tesla

This is the first tyre in this high-performance range designed specifically to suit the characteristics of electric-powered sports cars. And, as is customary for the French brand, it brings to the road everything learned so far in Formula E, where Michelin has been the sponsor and official tyre supplier since the start of this competition. Let’s remember that the tyres used in Formula E share a great deal of similarity with road tyres.

Michelin has also worked with Tesla to develop the Pilot Sport EV, which is approved for 20-inch wheels on the new Tesla Model Y already on sale in China. Commercial availability of the new Pilot Sport EV begins this very month of April, initially with 16 sizes for wheels from 19 to 22 inches. Here you can check the available sizes.

The features of the Michelin Pilot Sport EV

Bearing in mind that an electric car is heavier, has a lower centre of gravity due to the installation of the batteries (it is increasingly common for them to be located under the floor) and a high torque with almost instantaneous delivery, Michelin has designed the new Pilot Sport EV with these features:

  • Greater stability and precision with superior stiffness, without compromising grip on dry or wet surfaces, thanks to ElectricGrip Compound technology.
  • MaxTouch Construction structure to provide wear resistance, due to the greater weight and acceleration capability of electric sports cars.
  • Special compounds for lower rolling resistance which, according to Michelin, gives up to 60 km more range compared with a Pilot Sport 4.
  • Road noise reduction of up to 20% with Michelin’s Acoustic technology, which includes a foam band on the inside of the tyre.
  • Velvet-like finish on the sidewall

In addition, and just as with the Michelin e.Primacy, the brand invests in carbon credits to offset the residual CO2 emissions associated with the tyre’s manufacturing process and transport. This allows Michelin to advertise its new Pilot Sport EV as a tyre with a net-zero CO2 emissions balance at the time of purchase.
