New Lexus NX 2021: finally with a plug-in hybrid version

Lexus presents the new generation of the Lexus NX, with a completely redesigned look and plug-in hybrid technology for the first time in the Japanese brand.

Lexus has sold more than 170,000 units of its NX model in Europe since its launch in 2014. A mid-size SUV that has always stood out for the distinctive design and build quality that characterise the Japanese brand.

Now, Lexus presents its new Lexus NX 2021, which boasts up to 95% completely new parts compared with the model it replaces.

The design of the new Lexus NX

The design shift that Lexus wants to apply to its new models begins with the NX, but in no way is it a radical change that would fail to identify the vehicle as a Lexus from almost any angle. The aim has been to simplify the lines while still conveying elegance, sportiness and technology. And they have succeeded.

In terms of dimensions, the new Lexus NX is 20 mm longer and wider, and 5 mm taller; the wheelbase is 30 mm longer, and the track widths also increase. Some characteristic features are the Lexus spindle grille, now more vertical, or the L-shaped rear light clusters, always joined by a horizontal strip, beneath which the word LEXUS appears.

New multimedia system with a screen of up to 14 inches

Inside the cabin, the change in design is radical. The large screen of the new multimedia system takes centre stage in an elevated position, combining touch control with physical buttons and the new voice assistant, which responds to the command “hey Lexus”. The screen of the Lexus Link Connect system fitted as standard is 9.8 inches, and can reach 14 inches in the case of the Link Pro system, making it one of the largest in its class.

In addition, Lexus claims that the processor makes the system 3.6 times faster than the current multimedia system. Among its functions, online navigation with real-time traffic and travel information, through the car, without the need for external data. The wireless charging system for mobile phones has also been improved, which is up to 50% faster.

Among some new features, the E-Latch system stands out, the first time it is used in a Lexus. It replaces the classic door handle with a button next to the armrest. Remote control of some functions is entrusted to the Lexus Link app, which allows the car to be locked or unlocked remotely, or pre-conditioning to be activated.

First Lexus with plug-in hybrid technology

But one of the main novelties of the Lexus NX lies under the bonnet, with the arrival of plug-in hybrid technology.

The Lexus NX 450h+ uses the same system we have already tested with excellent results in the Toyota RAV4 PHEV. It combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor on the front axle, and with a second electric motor on the rear axle for the all-wheel-drive versions. The combined system output is 306 CV, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just over six seconds.

With a full charge of the lithium-ion battery, with 18.1 kWh of capacity, the Lexus NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid can travel up to 63 km in electric mode, with a top speed of 135 km/h.

This plug-in version keeps the same boot capacity as the Lexus NX 350h, with self-charging hybrid technology. In this case, it is the fourth generation of Toyota’s hybrid system, which increases power by 22% over its predecessor.

The new Lexus NX 350h promises an output of 242 CV, improving performance and reducing emissions by around 10%. It will be available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, in both cases with a towing capacity of 1,500 kg.
