The Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD gives us a preview of the German brand’s electric future and makes us dream of its arrival just as it has been presented to us

A couple of months ago, Opel gave us good news: they had set out to bring back a model as iconic for them as for enthusiasts of the motoring world, the Manta. But times have changed, or rather are changing, and the purists will have to settle for seeing it transformed into an electric car, but mind you, Opel brings us a modern Manta with a retro air that we absolutely love.

Named this new project Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD, this modern Manta GSe could well be considered the electric car that everyone would like to keep safely in their garage to show off. Overall it will be a vehicle that draws attention wherever you look at it, not only for its lines that recall another era, but also for the neon yellow paint that covers its bodywork, combined with the black bonnet, the same colour that also appears on the few inserts it carries and on the door frames.

But the new Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD will not only attract attention for its design: its imposing front hides the Opel Pixel-Vizor that stretches across its full width, which is nothing more than an LED screen with which the vehicle itself can communicate with its surroundings, in addition to including daytime running lights and LED headlights at its ends, while the rear lights are three-dimensional. On the sides, the 17-inch wheels designed by Ronal will also draw attention, fitted with 195/40 tyres on the front axle and 205/40 on the rear axle.

If we open its doors and step inside, I am sure you will not be disappointed in the least, where an exercise in design blends the old and the modern to perfection. Its sport seats with a yellow central stripe, inspired by the Adam S, offer perfect support and, once the driver is seated, they will find a three-spoke Petri steering wheel inspired by those of the 1970s, behind which sits the 10-inch screen of the virtual cockpit and, right next to it, another screen at the same level, 12 inches in size for the infotainment system and the sound system signed by Marshall.

The glossy black inserts on the dashboard and the yellow stripes will be combined with an interior in which matt grey is the star, present throughout the cabin thanks to the Alcantara that has been used on numerous elements such as the dashboard and roof trim, the door panels, the centre tunnel and the seats, although on the latter it is also combined with the same leather used on the steering wheel.

Mechanically, the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD has adapted to the new times we live in, and its powertrain will consist of an electric unit comprising a motor producing 147 CV with 255 Nm of torque, linked to a gearbox that allows manual shifts through its four gears or selection of automatic mode, delivering power to the rear axle at all times. Also part of this electric system is the 31 kWh lithium-ion battery, which would give it a range of around 200 km and can be charged in under 4 hours using the 9 kW onboard charger, which is prepared for single-phase or three-phase charging.

For now, this is all we know about the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD, and to be honest, we would love it to reach production form just as it has been presented to us, but naturally there will be changes if it does, although we hope they will not be many.
