Porsche Cayenne Coupé: better late than never...

The third generation of the Cayenne was needed before a brand like Porsche could offer the more “logical” version, the Porsche Cayenne Coupé.

At last, Porsche has a “coupé” version of its large SUV, the Porsche Cayenne Coupé. Ever since BMW launched the BMW X6, its main rivals have been adding coupé-style body variants to their ranges, with great success and customer acceptance.

Thus, the BMW X6 was joined by the Mercedes GLC, or more recently the Audi Q8. But at Porsche, the sportiest brand, and perhaps the one where a vehicle of this type would fit best, the Cayenne had remained alone for two generations.

Now, the third generation of the Cayenne expands the family with the arrival of the Porsche Cayenne Coupé. Basically, as usually happens in these cases, it is the same car with a series of aesthetic changes, mainly at the rear, and with a lower, more sloping roofline. Before going on, here are some video images.

The design changes on the new Cayenne Coupé

With a roof 20 mm lower, Porsche has had to reduce the size of the front windscreen and the A-pillar. The doors and rear wings have also been redesigned to widen the waistline by almost 2 centimetres. The rear number plate is now integrated into the bumper.

Porsche debuted an innovative adaptive roof spoiler on the Cayenne Turbo, which is also retained on the Porsche Cayenne Coupé. At speeds above 90 km/h it can deploy by extending to increase the load on the rear axle, also improving aerodynamic efficiency.

Another feature of the new Porsche Cayenne Coupé is the fixed glass panoramic roof, which has an area of 2.16 square metres. Optionally, customers can choose a carbon-fibre roof, in the purest style of the 911 GT3 RS.

It is offered as part of three available sport packs, which include other elements such as new 22-inch GT alloy wheels, carbon and Alcantara details for the interior, or a sport exhaust.

Inside, the Porsche Cayenne Coupé is configured as standard with two individual seats for the rear passengers. At no extra cost, they can be replaced by the three-seat bench seats of the Cayenne.

Regarding the latter, in the Coupé the passengers sit 30 mm lower, thus ensuring generous usable headroom despite the lower roofline.

Boot capacity is 625 litres (versus 770 for the Cayenne), which can be increased to 1,540 litres by folding down the rear seatbacks. In the Cayenne Turbo Coupé these figures are 600 and 1,510 litres respectively.

Two engines: V6 and V8 with 340 and 550 CV

In terms of engines, chassis, driver assistance, multimedia and connectivity, the Coupé version is equivalent to the Cayenne. Two variants are offered.

The Cayenne Coupé features the 3-litre turbo V6 with 340 CV and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. Fitted as standard with the Sport Chrono package, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds, and its top speed is 243 km/h.

At the top of the range, the Cayenne Turbo Coupé, with the 4-litre twin-turbo V8, 550 CV of power and a maximum torque of 770 Nm, covers the sprint in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 286 km/h. For the time being, no hybrid version has been announced.

Spanish prices for the Porsche Cayenne Coupé start at 97,217 euros with the V6 engine, and from 169,029 euros for the Turbo. Depending on the version, this means the Coupé is around 9,000 euros more expensive.

That said, its equipment is also superior. Among other things, it includes as standard Plus variable power steering, 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking assistance, the Sport Chrono package and PASM adaptive damping.
