Porsche Cayenne, the Porsche that came to save the company and ended up breaking records

Before turning 20 years in production, the Porsche Cayenne reaches a legendary number of units built. A milestone shaped by its evolution

The story of the Porsche Cayenne is that of an off-roader, despite being an SUV. From the context that inspired its conception to its technological evolution, adapting to the times and trends of each era, it shows that its introduction was not temporary and that it came to stay, despite the most skeptical.

The most critical of the first crossover of Porsche did not look kindly on the creature presented at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. Against a backdrop of the deep economic crisis that plunged the world into depression, luxury car sales, and above all those of Porsche, needed a jolt.

That came with the launch of the much-maligned Porsche Boxster, a two-seater that, in its early days, carried the label of being, roughly, “the cheap 911,” when it wasn’t dismissed with even more contempt… Whatever the case, far from being a failure, this sports car helped multiply the brand’s sales, especially among customers who understood the new sports car could be either the entry-level Porsche or a daily-driver Porsche.

Along the lines of the pillars that have always defined the company founded by Ferdinand Porsche, those in charge during the transition between millennia took the core values of the brand as the starting point for a new product, one of a new kind, one that would break the mould, one nobody expected.

The requirements it had to meet were clear and difficult to combine: powerful, dynamic and versatile, a family car with five seats and the DNA of a Porsche. The reinvention of the “sports car” concept came from the “Colorado” project.

The Porsche forever changed the meaning of the “sports car” concept

Based on the values the new Porsche had to embody, the Porsche of the new era, the 2000s sports car, the automotive world gave in and embraced the new meaning of a term that has never returned to its traditional sense.

That is why the Porsche that would see the light of day nearly five years after its proposal began to take shape on the basis of an architecture that, drawing on its integration within the Volkswagen Group Volkswagen and its relationship with it, took the equally disruptive Volkswagen Touareg, the benchmark among crossovers, as its reference point.

Thus, from leased premises in Hemmingen, Germany, the team literally sculpted what would become the first prototype, which in 1998 led to the presentation of what the Colorado project would become: the Porsche Cayenne.

From its presentation until receiving the green light for production, Porsche restructured its production line and laid the foundations for its commercialization with the determination to put a sporty off-roader on sale.

In 2002, as we said, the facilities where the first Porsche Cayenne units, with internal codes such as 955, would see daylight were ready for production.

Nearly 20 years of history

Since then this car has become, together with the iconic Porsche 911 and the Porsche Boxster itself, one of the fundamental pillars of the economy of Porsche, if not the fundamental pillar during several years before the introduction of what would have been the sporty, family-oriented five-seat Porsche the world expected, the Porsche Panamera. Given that for the new electrified era of the automobile, since its presentation in 2019, the Porsche Taycan has already outsold the aforementioned luxury saloon and, consequently, has risen as the best-selling Porsche this year.

As for the health of the Porsche Cayenne, thanks to the brand’s adaptability, its offering has shown the flexibility of a product adapted to its time: from the original petrol engines with greater or lesser power, to the introduction of the first diesel engine ever fitted under the bonnet of a car bearing the Stuttgart firm’s logo, through to its electrification and superb empowerment as a plug-in hybrid SUV, not forgetting that, although it was possibly the last to jump on the coupé fashion, its bodywork has not only changed from generation to generation but, in the latest, the PO536, appears with a stylish silhouette, as current beauty standards dictate.

The chameleonic evolution of its substance and form has allowed the Porsche Cayenne to build a history of records. From the simple fact of being the first SUV to dip below eight minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, to being the first vehicle to snatch the title of best-selling Porsche of the year from the all-powerful 911, to being one of the luxury vehicles capable of surpassing one million units built thanks to the Porsche Cayenne GTS leaving the Slovakian assembly line in Bratislava, which marks the 1,000,000th example in the Porsche Cayenne’s history across its generations.

Congratulations, and may there be many more.
