Renault Clio VI: Europe's eternal king returns to reign from Munich
Thirty-five years after its debut and with more than 130,500 units sold in the first half of 2025 alone, the Clio arrives in its sixth generation with E-Tech hybrid versions and a lighter, more rigid platform
Thirty-five years, six generations and a record few can match, the Renault Clio is not only the most successful city car of the French brand, but has also become a kind of “thermometer” of the European market. If the Clio sells, the industry smiles. And in 2025, with 130,500 units sold in just six months, the small great icon once again leads the charts. Now Renault is presenting the sixth generation of its pampered child with a world premiere in Munich.
On September 8 at 5:30 p.m., Renault will unveil the new Clio at an event broadcast live from the Bavarian capital, held in parallel with the IAA Mobility 2025. That the number 1 best-seller in Europe chooses to debut its new generation in Germany is a move to show that it can look its German rivals straight in the eye, even on their own home turf.

The new Clio can be seen in the flesh from September 9 to 14 at Odeonsplatz, where the brand will occupy one of the city’s most emblematic spaces to display what they call the “Renault universe”: from the futuristic Renault 5 and 4 E-Tech electric, to rarities such as the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, that electric “mini supercar” with 340 CV that we are eager to test.
What to expect from the new Clio?
Although Renault guards its specifications closely, there are clear hints. The sixth generation will arrive with the mission of remaining the benchmark in the B-segment, that battlefield where the Peugeot 208, the Toyota Yaris and the Volkswagen Polo already compete. And for that, the new Clio cannot afford half measures:
-
Mandatory electrification: hybrid as a minimum, with E-Tech versions that are already setting consumption records.
-
Refined platform: it is now lighter, more rigid and designed to meet the 2030 safety regulations.
-
Design with “Nouvelle Vague” DNA: following the style introduced by the new Renault 5, with retro-futuristic lines and a much more digitalized interior.

Renault knows that the Clio is not bought only with the head (price, practicality, reliability), but also with the heart, due to the emotional legacy this model has built across all its generations. In the 90s it was the chic compact, in the 2000s the aspirational city car, and today it wants to be the premium gateway to electrified mobility.
The brand’s stand in Munich will feature an audiophile bar with 120 vinyl records, “The Originals Renault Store” merchandise and immersive experiences that show Renault no longer competes only with cars… but with brand universes. A nod to how new generations buy experiences before engine displacement.
That the number 1 best-seller in Europe chooses to debut its new generation in Germany is a move to show that it can look its German rivals straight in the eye, even on their own home turf.
