Rumours about the Jeep Wrangler Scrambler, the pick-up body version, are intensifying

The arrival of the next generation of the Jeep Wrangler might bring not only a deep aesthetic overhaul, but also the arrival of a pick-up variant

This week seems to be a busy one for Jeep as far as rumours go, as we began it with reports that the Chinese group Great Wall was a new suitor for the American firm. We will see whether the FCA Group finally lets go of one of its iconic brands, though in the meantime the machinery keeps running, and at Jeep they are tackling the final stages of the renewal of the flagship of their range: the Wrangler.

A renewal made necessary by interior design considerations and, perhaps even more so, by technological equipment, something that will justify its price even further and not only its off-road qualities. This renewal will logically affect both its short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase bodies, but mind you, because many voices suggest that before long we will have to add a pick-up body to the range.

Thanks to the website JeepScramblerForum, we know the plans Jeep has for a possible future pick-up variant of the Wrangler, which will initially take the name Scrambler as its designation, a name that, incidentally, the FCA Group renewed in March 2015. In any case, at least for now, internally it is known by the initials JT.

They have also managed to find out, through the programme codes each vehicle receives, that the 3,000 cc V6 already present in the current Wrangler as one of its engines will be carried over. What is not confirmed is whether the petrol variants of 2,000 cc turbo and the 3,600 cc Pentastar V6 will be available among its engines, although this may be because the engine programme is not yet complete.

Continuing with the mechanical section, the same website has also obtained some CAD files showing the supposed axles of the Wrangler Scrambler, which they have compared with those currently fitted to the four-door Wrangler Unlimited. As a result of the comparison, it shows that the Wrangler Scrambler would be around 18% longer than the model it was compared with. Furthermore, it has also been seen that it would switch from the current Dana 44 axle to the Dana 12, thus increasing its payload and towing capacity.

As for the aesthetics, they indicate that it would offer three roof options: a rigid three-piece roof in black, also rigid in three pieces but in the same colour as the bodywork, or a soft top. They say nothing about cab types, but it is to be expected that it will be offered with a single or double cab. Finally, they venture to predict that its production would begin in 2018, in tandem with the new generation of the Wrangler, so stay tuned for news and let us hope it is not just a rumour as has happened before.
