Say goodbye for good to the Porsche 911 991: the last unit of this generation has rolled off the production line

Porsche has just announced that production of the 911 991 is coming to an end with the manufacture of unit 1,948 of the Speedster, a special edition.

The Porsche 911 has always been considered an automotive icon, generation after generation. Many are skeptical whenever the German manufacturer prepares to begin developing a new version of its favorite child, fearing that the changes will not be enough. The 991 generation of the nine-eleven was, without a doubt, one of the most successful and, although the 992 is already replacing it, a nostalgic feeling remains that has led the brand to classify the last unit produced as an ambassador of the Porsche Museum.

It was in 2011 when Porsche unveiled the result of the stoic and arduous exercise of developing a new 911 generation. The successor to the 997, internally codenamed 991, arrived into the world with a very similar formula, but seasoned with a series of features capable of making an overwhelming difference between the two.

This generation gave birth to the 911 variants we have grown accustomed to from Porsche and, as tradition dictates, the GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS. These last three were tasked with raising the sportiness characteristic of the nine-eleven to its highest level, something also made possible by the Speedster variant, which inherited an important legacy from its predecessors.

And so this version of the 911 991 was not only the last to launch before the production line was shut down, but it was also built up to the present date concurrently with its successor, the 992. A limited run of 1,948 units already anticipated that this variant of the illustrious German sports car was special, a sensation also conveyed through its styling and its mechanical layout, which is in danger of extinction.

The Speedster adopts a design that evokes its iconic predecessor thanks to a fabric roof that, manually, folds away beneath the two sculpted humps of the rear deck. This open-air capability is paired with the same engine that powers the GT3 RS, namely a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six capable of producing 510 CV and 469 Nm of torque, figures managed through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Unit number 1,948 has already rolled off Porsche’s production lines, painted in grey and ready to bring an end to a generation of the 911 that will be very difficult to surpass. Now, the legacy falls to the new 992, a version that will also have its respective sporting variants and will very likely feature the Speedster body style in the not-too-distant future.
