Stellantis is preparing to start producing electric versions of RAM models and Jeep

Although somewhat late, Stellantis has finally decided that the time has come to begin electrifying its vehicle range for the North American market.

Stellantis is making a significant investment in the United States, specifically in the state of Michigan, with the aim of adapting three of its facilities to produce electric vehicles. This initiative, totalling 406 million dollars, will allow the company to have electric and combustion-engine vehicles coexist on the production lines of these plants.

The epicentre of this transformation will be the Sterling Heights assembly plant, where 235.5 million dollars will be invested to turn it into Stellantis’s first facility in the United States dedicated to manufacturing a fully electric vehicle. This important step for the company contrasts with the situation in the European market, where Stellantis has already been producing electric vehicles for years.

The first model to benefit from this conversion will be the RAM 1500 REV pickup, a fully electric version of the popular RAM 1500, which is expected to start rolling off the plant’s production line at the end of 2024. This vehicle promises a range of up to 800 kilometres and will be based on Stellantis’s new STLA Frame platform, designed for large electric vehicles, whose most notable feature is that it allows the cells to be integrated directly into the chassis itself, thereby increasing the space available to house the entire battery pack.

That’s not all

In addition, Stellantis is also making significant investments at the assembly plant located in Warren for the production of the electrified Jeep Wagoneer, and at the Dundee engine plant, which will be adapted to manufacture battery trays and process structural elements of the STLA Frame and STLA Large platforms.

Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’s chief executive, has recently expressed his satisfaction with the transformation of Sterling Heights, highlighting the excellent work carried out by the company’s team dedicated to preparing the production of the first electric RAM pickup.

Stellantis will receive up to 584 million dollars from the US government for the reconversion of plants in Indiana and Illinois, which includes the transformation of a transmission plant in Kokomo, Indiana, to produce electric drive units, and the adaptation of a vehicle plant in Belvidere, Illinois, to manufacture electric vehicles.

With this series of moves, the company maintains its commitment that by 2030 all vehicles it sells in Europe will be electric, while in the United States electric vehicles are expected to represent 50 per cent of its sales by then.
