The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport attempts new lap times at the Nürburgring

Bugatti is reportedly trying to beat its Nürburgring lap record with a Veyron Super Sport.

Bugatti is attempting to recover the lost time at the Nürburgring in order to leave behind the fastest lap so far set by the hypercar on the Green Hell, a time now surpassed by many other cars with less power. The 7:40 lap set by the previous Veyron could be hard to compare with what a recent version of the Super Sport can achieve.

A Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, with nearly 1,200 hp, has recently been seen running around the German circuit, so one can only imagine that Bugatti is trying to update the figures. With 183 hp more than the original Veyron, the possibilities exist and are plausible, although the Nürburgring is not only about the car with the highest straight-line speed, but also about the one that can take the corners quickly and with composure.

To add insult to injury for Bugatti, the 1:40 lap has never been officially verified, so it does not appear in the extensive list of times for every car that has done anything noteworthy on the ring. Times of 7:40 have been set by the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the Porsche 911 GT3 997MkII and the Mercedes SLS AMG, all with laps dating from some time ago (3 years for the most recent). Nowadays, many cars less powerful than the Veyron have already beaten them by a wide margin.

It remains to be seen whether the Super Sport can really make the most of the ring’s corners, since here it cannot boast top speed, the straight Döttinger Höhe being the only place where the Veyron would be able to put in a dominant performance.
