The Citroën Nemo and the Peugeot Bipper (and their lack of ESP) fail ADAC's elk test

The lack of ESP (electronic stability control) has led the twin cars Citroën Nemo and Peugeot Bipper to fail the tests known as the elk test, by ADAC. For information, the elk test consists of swerving to avoid an imaginary object while driving at road speed. ADAC carried out the test at a speed of 80 km/h on the two Groupe PSA vehicles that do not have ESP, compared against the Fiat Qubo, which has ESP as an add-on.

The results are clear: the Citroën Nemo rolled over during the test, while the Fiat remained stable through the manoeuvre (given the Nemo’s result, the Bipper was not even tested). It must be considered that this type of vehicle has a fairly high centre of gravity and is very prone to rolling over in a manoeuvre like this. Therefore, stability control is essential for vehicles of this type.

Groupe PSA has already responded by announcing that it will fit the Citroën Nemo and Peugeot Bipper with ESP as standard in the coming months, postponing the diesel models until September of this year.

It is worth recalling that in 2005 the Dacia Logan failed in the same way in these ADAC tests, to which Renault responded that the test had been carried out with the model fitted with optional aluminium wheels, which caused an immediate wheel detachment in a very tight bend. It seems Renault carried out its own tests with the model fitted with steel wheels, which were successful.
