It is well known that the BMW M2 is in development and that it will be something worth seeing, although since the rumour of a possible CSL version of the M2 emerged, the simple idea of driving a small engineering marvel that could be the shadow of the great M3 and M4 becomes irresistible. But wait a moment, because BMW’s design chief has announced the return of the E30 M3 in a new vehicle.

The announcement made by Adrian van Hooydonk in an interview with Autocar magazine has sparked the interest of BMW enthusiasts. A future model could show design details of the original E30 M3, which featured a bodywork with wide bumpers and the legendary spoiler above the boot lid.

The fans of the first BMW to go through the M division, and which you could buy, remain numerous. This was happening in the late 80s, when European saloons began to offer versions more powerful than the usual standards, and a new vehicle concept emerged: sports saloons. Nowadays, these vehicles usually fit turbos and have lost the purity of the E30 M3 and its naturally aspirated four-cylinder 2.3-litre engine.

History lessons aside, the announcement by BMW’s design chief may not stop at a simple comment. The rumour that has just emerged about the possible M2 CSL could be the perfect scenario, since the Bavarian firm would give free rein to the use of carbon fibre, bringing the vehicle’s weight down to around 1,400 kilograms, which, combined with the 370 CV sent directly to the rear axle, would mean a combination of sensations that could evoke the E30 M3.

In short, we must wait to see how this whole matter evolves, which, by the way, looks very promising, and who knows, but could BMW give all its fans such a special car for its 100 years of history celebrated in 2016?
