The FIAT Topolino will return, but with the DNA of the Citroën AMI

Citroën Ami

The first city cars originated from the need for everyone to have access to a vehicle. Thus, each country set out to create a model that was practical and economical. Germany had its Volkswagen Beetle and Italy focused on creating the FIAT Topolino. It was manufactured from 1935 to 1955. Now, more than 60 years later, this model could make a comeback.

Obviously, the Italian brand is thinking of turning it into the most functional city car and it will be a very compact car designed for getting around the city. According to Automotive News, the outlet that announced this return, the model will be based on the Citroën AMI, a microcar that has achieved considerable success in urban electric mobility.

In principle, only for Italy

This model could be limited to the Italian market only, so it will be difficult to see it on Spanish city streets. This is not unusual, as it is a policy Stellantis follows in other countries. For example, in Germany the AMI is not sold and instead there is the Opel Rocks-e. This one also has a lot in common with the AMI, so the future Topolino could be the Italian version of the same vehicle.

As for the trim level, the Topolino may offer a more complete trim level than the AMI. That said, as has been explained, the powertrain will be the same one used by the AMI. This would mean the FIAT Topolino will offer an engine with a power output of 8 CV and a top speed of 45 km/h. All of this is designed for moving easily around the city.

Production could be moved to the Stellantis plant in the Moroccan town of Kenitra. Furthermore, and to differentiate the Topolino from its two other concept siblings, we may see a convertible version. Italian design for a small car returning from the past.
