The future of Volvo will involve new batteries that are more efficient and smaller

Volvo’s plans involve developing batteries for electric vehicles that use cells with higher energy density and faster charging.

Volvo Híbrido

The future of Volvo involves electric mobility, something we already knew several months ago. But the brand wants to push forcefully in this direction and will not limit itself to applying current technology to its future electric models. The collaboration between Volvo and the battery company Northvolt will make it possible to develop new batteries that will allow increased capacity and reduced charging time, as well as lower volume and weight.

The work of the two companies involves developing batteries with cells that have 50% more capacity than current ones. This means that the batteries will weigh less and have more capacity. Good news that will reduce the total weight of the vehicle without compromising its range.

The second generation of electric cars

The second generation of electric cars is being designed and will feature this type of battery. They will allow cars to be recharged more quickly and store the same amount of energy in a smaller space. In addition, bidirectional charging will be incorporated into the future Volvo XC90, allowing this model to supply electricity to the home during periods of intensive electricity use, helping to reduce the monthly electricity bill. Charging can be scheduled for low-rate hours, which means considerable savings.

The third generation of Volvo electric cars will arrive shortly afterwards and will bring further innovations. In this case, the aim is to increase range considerably and reduce charging time by roughly half. This will make it much more practical and efficient to use one of these third-generation Volvo vehicles.

The possibility of having a range of up to 1,000 kilometres will be achievable with these new batteries. Volvo’s strategy also involves a policy of battery recovery and recycling. Volvo’s plans would involve using batteries that no longer meet the requirements to power an electric car as energy storage points in homes and businesses.

The partnership between Volvo and Northvolt guarantees that innovations in this type of battery are possible and that this will considerably advance everything related to electric mobility, which will end up prevailing on European roads from 2030 onwards.
