The Hummer EV shows some of its specifications... and they are startling

The new GM Hummer EV leaves no one indifferent, and many people are waiting for it to reach the market. But the company has just announced some of the features and specifications of the model, and they certainly go well beyond the ordinary. It is an electric vehicle derived from a heavy off-roader, so we did not expect anything less from this electric version. But some of the published figures have surprised us.

This data came to light through a report submitted to the EPA, the United States Environmental Protection Agency. According to what can be seen in this report, there is one figure we already partly knew, but which is now definitively confirmed.

The weight of the Hummer EV far exceeds that of other off-road vehicles found on the market. In fact, many of them have an average weight of 2,700 kg, but the Hummer EV’s records push the figure up to 4,111 kg. The main culprit behind this high weight is the battery that powers the electric traction system.

It is a battery with a capacity of 212.7 kWh, and this capacity makes it large and heavy. It registers 1,325 kg, the same as an average compact car. With such a large battery, it is only natural for the weight to soar, which causes this vehicle to face certain problems in international markets.

For example, in Spain it could not be driven with a B licence, which is the one most of us hold. This only allows driving vehicles with a maximum weight of 3,500 kg, which makes it practically unfeasible for the average driver.

More weight, more consumption

This excessive weight takes its toll on consumption. The battery may have a fairly considerable capacity, but the weight means the energy use per 100 kilometres is excessive. The range on the EPA cycle was rated at 560 kilometres, but with the latest measurements it stands at 529 kilometres.

The Hummer EV remains a car you need not worry about efficiency for, and it is still a beast that consumes more than is advisable. Before, it ran on fuel, and now on electricity. Will this new iteration of the model be successful? Possibly in the United States, but it is too large for Spanish roads, not to mention the additional problems it presents.
