The new BMW i3 and its sporty variant, the i3s, already have their prices set in Spain

The small BMW i3 has recently been renewed to keep it up to date, with light touch-ups that do not make a great difference compared with the outgoing model, and the design of the i3 is effective enough to keep it almost unchanged. Perhaps the main novelty lies in the addition of the i3s variant, which will also arrive in our country at the same time as the basic version.

The new BMW i3 is set apart externally by small new details affecting the design of the front and rear bumpers, a new design for the LED lights which are now integrated into the bumper, the door frames have also been modified, and a new design of alloy wheels has been fitted. In addition, the colour range has been expanded, with the option of a new exterior colour in two tones.

The BMW i3s is distinguished aesthetically from its smaller sibling by an image that gives it more sporty features thanks to the inclusion of certain design elements, although if we look a little more closely we will notice that it is slightly lower (10 mm) and has a wider track (40 mm). The new-design wheels are 20 inches as standard on the i3s, fitted with 175/55 tyres at the front and 195/50 at the rear.

As for the interior, just as on the exterior, the changes are not major and keep the base of the new LifeDrive vehicle architecture of BMW . Both models will have the same trim levels Loft, Lodge and Suite, which sit above the Atelier level offered as standard. The infotainment, communication, navigation and safety systems will be the same for both, also featuring the latest version of BMW iDrive.

Mechanically there are differences between the two in terms of power. The BMW i3 continues to have the 170 CV synchronous electric motor and a torque of 250 Nm, with the particularity that its range can be increased if we install a small combustion engine (REX option), which acts solely as a generator and range extender. The same electric motor and the same REX option are carried over to the BMW i3s, with the difference that in this model the power is increased to 184 CV.

Naturally, this increase in power brings better performance, translating into acceleration to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds for the i3 and 6.9 seconds for the i3s. It would also be logical for range to be affected as a result, especially on the i3s, but BMW’s engineers have managed things so that its 94 Ah battery provides up to 300 km of range according to the NEDC test cycle, for both the i3 and the i3s.
