The new De Tomaso supercar will be tuned at the Nürburgring. Finally, after several years of waiting, the De Tomaso P72 is getting closer to production. Rivals such as the Ferrari SF90 will soon have a new battle companion. The company behind the Pantera and the Mangusta has announced that it has a new technical partner that will help bring the De Tomaso P72 to production.

De Tomaso’s new partner is the Grupo Capricornio. This company has already worked on models such as the Porsche 919 LMP 1, which won the Le Mans title. The goal of this partnership is to help De Tomaso build the sports car at the new plant located at the Nürburgring.

The brand has acknowledged the complications it has faced due to the pandemic, but has been working to find the safest path. Its original plan was to develop the P72 in the United States, but a series of problems ended up derailing the proposed schedule. As a result, De Tomaso has made a strategic business decision to create pre-series and production units of the P72, together with Capricorn.

Regardless, it promises that the brand’s current partnerships, together with its facilities, powertrain operations and initiatives will expand its presence in North America. De Tomaso has assured that this decision also solidifies its philosophy of an unrelenting pursuit of excellence as it expands its in-house team while taking on a new partnership.

De Tomaso Automobili president Norman Choi has stated that “since our reactivation of De Tomaso, there has been a great focus on the P72 and its development program, which is progressing very well. In addition, we have been making great progress in our commercial development, establishing a solid foundation for our future expansion of De Tomaso,”

“Today we are proud to announce a new strategic partnership that reaffirms our philosophy, strengthens our core competencies and guarantees the highest level of quality for our future offerings. Our P72 will not only be developed, but also produced at the legendary Nürburgring, providing unmatched experience, quality and value for our customers.”

Alongside this announcement, De Tomaso has also provided an update on the P72. It confirms that the original idea of a carbon chassis has been scrapped in favor of a completely new idea. This design gives the supercar more headroom and legroom without adjustments to the exterior proportions.

A new suspension geometry is joined to this chassis to enhance its safety features and improve quality standards. It confirms that the center of gravity has also been significantly lowered. With this new body, De Tomaso confirms that the P72 chassis exceeds the respective FIA safety and homologation requirements and features a carbon monocoque that protects the occupants without the need for a roll cage.

De Tomaso has clarified that construction of its pre-series prototypes is underway, now that the production vehicle’s engineering is complete. In the coming months, we can expect the debut of these prototypes, followed by the final stages of development, calibration, validation and crash testing of the vehicle.

Once this is complete, De Tomaso will get to work on creating the final product, and deliveries will begin in the first half of 2023. The P72 is understood to keep its original powertrain roots and will employ a 5.0-litre V8 that has been supercharged by Roush to produce 700 CV.
