The next Porsche 911 and Audi R8 could share the same structure

According to several anonymous sources, the next generation of the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8 would be more similar than ever. Both supercars could be built on the same modular platform of the VAG group.

Although the new generation of the 911 will keep the engine at the rear axle and the next R8 will retain its mid-mounted engine, it seems these two supercars will share part of their structure. There is a possibility that both models will be produced on the same modular platform of the VAG group.

Even though they share the structure, the R8 is expected to keep the naturally aspirated V10 engine. In this case the supercars would use the same structure on their front axle and an identical steering system, thereby helping to reduce the costs of developing and manufacturing both models.

But for now, details on how the engineers at Porsche and Audi will develop these models are scarce. It seems likely that Porsche will take part in developing the next R8 once the new 911 reaches the market towards the end of the decade. This is a very unusual situation considering that both models are direct rivals in the premium segment.

Fortunately for fans of naturally aspirated engines, the future R8 is unlikely to follow the example of the 911, which will adopt turbocharged engines across its entire range. In this sense, Audi is expected to follow the path of Lamborghini by keeping the current V10 engine of the R8, which it already shares with the Huracán.
