This is what happens when the SEAT designer and the Ducati designer swap roles

The designers at SEAT and Ducati have swapped roles for a day, getting to see the differences between creating a motorcycle and a racing car.

The world of competition is very similar across all categories, but at the same time we find great differences, especially when it comes to two completely different types of vehicles. This is what happened when the SEAT designer and the Ducati designer swapped roles to design a racing vehicle, and found that they are not as similar as one might think.

In the offices of designers Daniel García and Edoardo Lenoci a slight change has taken place. The designer from the Spanish brand has stepped into the role of the designer at the Italian motorcycle maker Ducati, and vice versa. Both focus their work not only on road vehicles but also on racing. In this way they have been able to see the differences and similarities between the worlds of two and four wheels.

Daniel García has been in charge of the design of the SEAT León Cup Racer, while Edoardo Lenoci is responsible for the design of the Ducati Desmosedici GP. Both vehicles play their role on the track, with the aim of dominating every race and taking victory.

The two designers share with each other the complexities and curiosities of the creation process for both vehicles. Daniel explains that the design of the SEAT León Cup Racer begins on paper and, as it progresses, the idea is moved to the computer so the process can be digitised and the conception of the vehicle completed in a more precise way.

On the other hand, Edoardo points out that the design of a racing motorcycle starts directly from a digital base, and its creation both begins and ends inside the computer. Another element that marks a strong difference between designing the two vehicles is that, in the case of the motorcycle, the dimensions and shape of the rider who will ride it must be taken into account. Undoubtedly this is not part of car design.

Following on from the previous point – which Daniel encountered when designing a motorcycle himself – in vehicles great importance is given to finding a perfect balance between aerodynamics, speed and the car’s grip on the tarmac. On this the designers do not differ, but Edoardo notes that in this area the characteristics of the rider still have an influence, since the creation of some parts is conditioned by the latter.

Undoubtedly the differences between the two worlds are very notable, but this day of talks by the two designers has helped to better understand the process of creating their products. Daniel and Edoardo return home with new knowledge and ideas that they are sure they can apply to future vehicles.
