Toyota is also considering it: the next Aygo could be electric

The Toyota Aygo could be the next city car to abandon the petrol engine and switch to a next-generation electric powertrain

For some time now, manufacturers have been rethinking the usefulness of city cars, the small city cars we usually see around town. Mainly, they argue that they cannot meet emissions limits, so the main manufacturers are considering gradually turning them into fully electric cars.

One of those manufacturers is Toyota, and the decision to end production of the Toyota Aygo as we know it is currently under way. It is worth remembering that this city car is the only model from the Japanese brand without a hybrid version, a detail worth noting. But although the change seems confirmed, it will still take some time.

The third generation of the Toyota Aygo has been confirmed and will be built at the factory the company shares with the PSA group in the city of Kolin, Czech Republic. This plant will stop being shared in 2021 and will become fully owned by Toyota. It produces both the Aygo and the Citroën C1 and the Peugeot 108.

From that point on, the factory, with capacity to build 300,000 vehicles of this type a year, will only produce the Aygo. That figure is very high for a single model, especially when sales of these small city cars are declining.

This could change if the Aygo becomes electric and sales of this type of zero-emission vehicle multiply, as is expected. The third generation of the Toyota Aygo has not been defined and could be that version of the change, with an electric powertrain, which could make it one of the most popular city models in those first years of the electric car boom.

The main current users of the Toyota Aygo are young drivers, who could also be the ones choosing this type of car in the near future. The presence of models such as the SEAT Mii or the Skoda Citigo opens up the market for this type of car and will likely be an interesting market for the next decade.
