TruCAM II: the infallible radar arrives

The TruCAM II has just been unveiled and shows features that make it infallible, with a range of up to 1,500 metres.

The Directorate-General for Traffic is extending the presence of speed cameras across the whole country, so there are already more than 2,000 radars installed on our roads. The variety is very wide: we already have fixed and mobile radars, tandem radar systems and the new DGT drones.

However, a new member may join this advanced family. Its name is TruCAM II and it is the most powerful speed-measuring device in existence. This new device was unveiled at the International Salon of Safe and Sustainable Mobility in Madrid and amazed attendees with its capability: it can detect speeding at a distance of up to 1,500 metres.

With this range, the TruCAM II even outperforms the Pegasus helicopter used by the DGT, which can cover up to 1,000 metres. Not to mention the Veloláser, the latest radars the DGT installed, in which it invested no less than 860,310 units for 60 units, that is, 14,338.50 euros each. And these last ones have a range of only 50 metres.

It is true that this new radar works optimally within a distance range of 15 to 150 metres. Within this range it can take high-definition photographs at speeds of up to 320 km/h, with a margin of error of only 2 km/h. Thanks to the capture system of this advanced device, it can measure a vehicle’s speed three times per second, so it can take a photo every 0.33 seconds.

One of the most valued aspects of these safety systems is their size, and in this respect the TruCAM II once again proves its worth. Its dimensions are really small: it is 21 cm long, 9.8 wide and 31.7 high, that is, smaller than the Veloláser.

In addition, its aluminium construction means it weighs only 1.6 kilograms, so it is no problem to move it from one place to another to change its location. It has a lithium battery pack that lets it operate non-stop for ten hours.

It can work at night and can take photographs of the car’s cabin to catch all kinds of distractions at the wheel. Like the Veloláser, it can distinguish between commercial vehicles, industrial vehicles, passenger cars, and so on.

The TruCAM II has a 9.4-inch touchscreen installed so the images taken can be viewed immediately, and it is resistant to both water and extreme temperatures, supporting a range of between -10 and 60 degrees Celsius.

Therefore, the TruCAM II is only a project presented at the International Salon of Safe and Sustainable Mobility, but everything indicates that it will become the DGT’s new tool. However, we leave you the report from our colleagues at Highmotor on the new radars the DGT installed in 2018.
