This video shows us a Volkswagen Golf R with an interesting secret: the engine of an Audi RS3 under the hood along with significant modifications.

We have spent a long time fantasizing about that idyllic Volkswagen Golf R400, a supposed variant of the German compact that would use the acclaimed five-cylinder turbo from the Audi. However, neither Audi nor Volkswagen were willing to back down, so that variant will simply remain in our imagination, although its absence will be partly remedied thanks to the CUPRA Formentor with the five-cylinder. However, the owner of this Volkswagen Golf R has decided to take matters into their own hands by carrying out a swap with the engine from the Audi.

Yes, this is another case based in the United Kingdom, a car tax haven where the MOT -the equivalent of the ITV- is not even half as strict as our technical inspections here. With this premise, we find a Volkswagen Golf R not only with the engine of the Audi RS3 inside, but also with significant modifications.

Aesthetically, we find an almost Volkswagen Golf R of the seventh generation, completely ordinary. The front has been enhanced with a new splitter -although it is split in half- and a carbon fibre bonnet that includes two air outlets. The side, for its part, keeps the 19-inch Pretoria wheels, though now housing the same brake discs offered by the Audi RS3.

The rear has been accentuated with a double oval exhaust outlet and a more pronounced spoiler. The cabin features bucket-type seats taken directly from a sixth-generation Golf R and a steering wheel with carbon fibre trim. But the real crux of the matter lies in the mechanical section, where the five-cylinder has undergone significant upgrades.

As standard, this 2.5-litre produces 400 CV of power and 480 Nm of torque, figures that in this Golf R rise to 640 CV and 800 Nm of torque. To achieve this, a TTE700 hybrid turbo, an APR intercooler, a Scorpion exhaust and various ECU modifications have been used, combined with an anti-roll bar and new suspension courtesy of Bilstein.

It is true that this Volkswagen Golf R departs from that supposed Golf R400, but without a doubt the concept and idea are basically the same. In this way, the owner of this unit can enjoy a pairing that many can only dream of.
