Volkswagen slides in a first image of its future urban electric vehicle, the ID.1

The ID.1 will use a reduced version of the MEB platform, called MEB Entry, with a wheelbase shortened by 10 centimetres.

At a work meeting at its headquarters in the German city of Wolfsburg, Volkswagen offered its employees a first look at what will be its most affordable electric model, whose production could take place at the Barcelona plant in Martorell, although the latter has not yet been confirmed.

The details that have emerged from that meeting are not many, as the company has preferred to keep things secret, but at least they have given us the leak of an image of the front of the vehicle and the confirmation of the presentation of a prototype quite close to the final production version this coming March.

The official and definitive presentation of the ID.1 is scheduled for 2027, although that does not imply that its market launch will take place that same year, so it is not ruled out that it could be postponed until the following one. The ID.1, as we said, will be the most affordable electric model in the German manufacturer’s range within a few years, with a price that should be around 20,000 euros, or at least that is the company’s goal.

With the ID.1, Volkswagen wants to repeat the success that its urban electric car, the e-Up!, already had

Volkswagen already presented in 2023 a first prototype of the future production version of the ID.2, which will be the big brother of this ID.1. If everything goes as planned, the ID.2 will reach the market in 2026 and everything points to its production taking place at the Landaben plant in Navarre. The price of the ID.2 seems likely to be around 25,000 euros, so it will probably be about 5,000 euros more expensive than the ID.1.

Beyond that price difference, we can expect the ID.1 to have slightly smaller dimensions. On the other hand, judging by what we saw at the presentation of the ID.2all prototype and following the publication of this first image of the front of the future ID.1, it seems that the intention of Volkswagen is for the appearance of both models to show clear differences and for the latter not to be merely a reduced version of the former with an almost identical “look“.

Volkswagen ID.2all

“An accessible, high-quality and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe. With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we launched the most important future plan in the history of Volkswagen. We are following an ambitious path to ensure we reach our future goals. A key step in achieving this is making electric mobility attractive for everyone. That is precisely our brand promise”.
