Volkswagen will pay 15,000 million dollars in compensation in the United States

15,000 million dollars. That is what the Volkswagen Group will have to pay in compensation in the United States for cheating on emissions controls on 2.0 TDI engines, with around 475,000 cars affected.
The multinational carmaker has just confirmed the agreement reached with the various institutions of the country. In this way, financial compensation for customers who wish to receive it in the United States is now guaranteed. Let us break down the three parts into which the 15,000 million dollars that Volkswagen will have to reinvest in America are divided.
10,000 million dollars for the purchase of affected vehicles
American regulations are very different from European ones. Because they are much stricter there, the solutions Volkswagen offers in Europe still fall short for the North American market. For the affected vehicles to meet the declared emissions, their power would have to be limited, something that will not please anyone. For this reason, they offer the option of an adaptation with a loss of power, or the buy-back of the car. Volkswagen will pay based on the valuations of each vehicle that existed just before the scandal came to light, paying between 5,100 and 10,000 dollars per unit.

2,700 million as compensation to the EPA
The Environmental Protection Agency will receive this amount of money within a period of three years to remedy the excessive particles of NOx emitted by the affected 2.0 TDI vehicles. We do not know how, but the EPA will have to manage this money and invest it in cleaning up the nitrogen oxides that the German company’s cars emitted in excess.
2,000 million will go to the company’s ecological projects
It seems that, to ease its conscience, the agreement obliges them to invest 2,000 million dollars in the North American market in ecological projects, which include zero-emission vehicles, their infrastructure, and awareness initiatives.
What about the other affected engines?
Volkswagen says it is working to deliver solutions for the 3-litre V6 diesel engines that are also affected. In this case, the number of manipulated vehicles in the United States is 85,000 units.
