Volvo Classic: the Volvo 780

It has been 25 springs since Volvo unveiled at the Geneva show its latest and exclusive creation, the Volvo 780. This grand coupé was the result of the partnership between the Swedish brand and the Italian manufacturer Carrozzeria Bertone, which handled the design and the manufacturing at its factories in Turin. With fewer than 9,000 units produced and sold, today it is a collector’s car.

It could be fitted with three engines, all quite powerful: a 2.8 V6, a second one with a turbo, and a third turbodiesel six-cylinder inline that Volvo used to employ. However, performance was somewhat modest: none of them could reach 200 km/h, which was key to clearing the psychological barrier in Germany, where on its autobahns you can floor the accelerator.

Even so, the comfort on the road, the quietness of the vehicle and its exclusivity made it suitable for export to the United States and Japan, as well as to some European markets, including Sweden. Its equipment was very well furnished with all kinds of electric features: seats, windows, mirrors and the sunroof, no less, by 1985.

It was not a purely sporty car, but it offered good performance and was a true mobile home with all kinds of luxury and exclusivity, given its very high price and its exclusive design from Italy, the birthplace of motoring. Today, at some conventions these units can be seen which, as the photo shows, have a rather attractive design for being 25 years old.
