Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine: the plug-in hybrid Swedish SUV for 2019

The third plug-in hybrid SUV in the Volvo range is the new Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine

The Volvo XC40 PHEV was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in R-Design trim, with a two-tone body finish (white with black roof), the charging flap on the front left wing and the Twin Engine badge on the rear as the only exterior features that set the plug-in hybrid version apart from the Volvo compact SUV.

This presentation announced the addition of another new plug-in hybrid SUV to the brand’s PHEV family, alongside its larger siblings, the Volvo S90 Twin Engine, the V60 Twin Engine, and the two SUVs, the XC60 Twin Engine and the XC90 Twin Engine.

Powerful, hybrid, plug-in and efficient

The Swedish brand starts from the new Drive-e 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, producing 195 CV, to which an electric system is added. The combination of the combustion engine and the electric motor delivers a combined output of 262 CV in the Volvo XC40 PHEV, placing it on a par with the current XC40 T5 with its 2.0-litre four-cylinder Turbo engine, but with a lower overall weight.

The propulsion system, developed in collaboration with Geely, would allow the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine to achieve an electric-only range of between 44 and 46 km. It features a 10.7 kWh lithium-ion battery housed in the floor of the body, which gives it greater stability thanks to a low centre of gravity.

Thanks to the combination of petrol and electric powertrains, the consumption of this plug-in hybrid Volvo XC40 is officially rated below 2 l/100 km, to be precise, 1.9 litres per 100 km. In addition, CO2 emissions stand at 38-43 g/km, already below the legal maximum set for 2021.

To ensure a response suited to the driving situation, the plug-in hybrid Volvo XC40 will offer five drive modes. The Hybrid mode lets the system combine both engines for everyday use. Efficiency or sportiness can be prioritised with the Power and Pure modes, and there is also a dedicated Off Road mode and an Individual mode configurable to each driver’s preferences.

It is worth noting that this crossover is fitted with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Launch and price of the plug-in hybrid Volvo XC40

The T5 engine of the Volvo XC40 PHEV will be offered with four trim levels: Momentum, Business Plus, Inscription and R-Design.

According to the brand’s configurator, the cheapest Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine price, the Momentum pack, starts at 45,150 euros, while the most expensive, the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine R-Design, starts at 49,869.

The arrival of the first Volvo XC40 PHEV units is scheduled for the last quarter of 2019.
