Xpeng begins installing its new 800 kW ultra-fast charging points
Although in practice there may be some variations, theory suggests that at 800 kW of power it should be possible to add around 500 km of range to a generic electric vehicle in just 7 minutes.
Chinese manufacturer Xpeng has begun upgrading its charging infrastructure in its home market with the installation of the first units of its new HPC S5 ultra-fast charging points, capable of reaching a power of up to 800 kW. To date, Xpeng’s most powerful charging point was the S4 model, which debuted in 2022 promising a maximum power of 480 kW.
According to an official Xpeng statement, reported by local media, the first S5 charging points have already been connected to the electricity grid this very month of September at the company’s charging stations located in some of China’s most important cities, such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Zhengzhou and Wuhan. Xpeng also plans to extend the availability of this new generation of ultra-fast charging points to other Chinese cities in the coming weeks, including Shenzhen, Beijing or Chengdu.

Xpeng unveiled its new S5 ultra-fast charging points at the end of last July. As we told you then in another article published here on HighMotor, the new S5 charging points are capable of delivering a maximum current of 800 amperes with an output voltage of up to a thousand volts, resulting in a charging power of up to 800 kW. Xpeng has already expressed its intention to complement its existing S4 charging points with this new technology, rather than replace them, thereby seeking to further strengthen its charging network.
Xpeng continues to bet heavily on its own charging network
At present, Xpeng’s network in China has around 1,440 charging stations spread across the country, of which 560 offer fast charging points. In addition, the Chinese manufacturer has integrated around 88,000 third-party charging stations into its network. This, however, is only the beginning, since by 2026 Xpeng plans to have around 10,000 of its own stations, of which 4,500 will feature ultra-fast charging points.

Finally, it is worth noting that the installation of these 800 kW ultra-fast charging points is yet another sign of the enormous competition currently existing in China’s electric car market. The race to offer ever faster charging solutions has also led other manufacturers to follow the same path as Xpeng. For example, NIO presented a few months ago a new charging point capable of delivering up to 640 kW of power, alongside the fourth generation of its battery swapping stations, which significantly reduce the time needed to complete this operation.
