The Centro Zaragoza is a vehicle research institute owned by 23 insurance companies in Spain and Portugal, which recently presented the “BEST SAFETY CHOICE CZ 2009” awards in Brussels.

Among the vehicles considered the safest, there are 10 cars from seven brands, all European except Ford. The tests assess the active and passive safety of the different models, as well as the safety systems such as ESP (in fact, all the award winners have ESP across the entire range) and rear-end collision tests.

The award-winning vehicles are the following:

  • City cars: Alfa Romeo Mi.To
  • Compact cars: Volkswagen Golf
  • Saloons: Opel Insignia and Ford Mondeo
  • Premium saloons: Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • Compact MPVs: Mercedes-Benz B-Class
  • Large MPVs: Ford S-MAX
  • Compact SUV: Volvo XC60
  • Large SUV: Volvo XC90
