BMW begins series production of its renewed iX electric SUV

The first units of BMW’s renewed electric SUV are already rolling off the company’s German plant in Dingolfing, and will soon reach the first customers.

The Bavarian manufacturer has just announced that production of the renewed version of its iX electric SUV has already begun at its German Dingolfing plant. The previous generation of this model has been coming off the assembly line at this same plant since 2021, and to date more than 130,000 units have been sold worldwide.

As we already told you here at HighMotor, BMW officially unveiled the iX refresh at the end of last January. Beyond the changes to its exterior design, the manufacturer highlights the range of the new iX, which in its xDrive60 version becomes the longest-range electric model in the group to date, reaching 701 kilometres under the WLTP homologation cycle.

From the management of the Dingolfing plant, they note that this model is really special for them, since the debut of the first generation four years ago opened the door to technologies that are now of great importance to the company. With its arrival, the plant began to focus on the production of fully electric models, and today, in addition to the iX, it also assembles the i7, the i5 and their estate variants, for a total of four electric models.

The iX’s exterior redesign brings no drastic changes, although they are interesting. In any case, the Bavarian manufacturer chose to focus on implementing technological improvements. Although this electric SUV from BMW keeps the same 400-volt architecture, all three versions of the model have received improvements in performance and range.

Important changes to keep in mind across the whole range

The previous generation’s iX xDrive40 is now called the iX xDrive45, increasing the combined power of its motors by 60 kW to reach 300 kW. In this way, this entry-level version of the range reduces the time needed to reach 100 km/h from a standstill by exactly one second, from 6.1 seconds to 5.1 seconds. For its part, the iX xDrive60, formerly known as the xDrive50, raises its power from 385 to 400 kW, reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.6 seconds. Both models have a top speed limited to 200 km/h.

The top of the range is now the M70 xDrive version, previously known as the M60. This version increases combined power by 30 kW to 485 kW and offers a maximum torque of 1,100 Nm. With Launch Control, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and is capable of reaching 250 km/h.

Regarding the range of these new versions, the base xDrive45 now comes with a battery pack with 30 percent more capacity thanks to new cells, rising from 74.1 kWh to 94.8 kWh. The capacity increase of the xDrive60 battery is much more modest, going from 108.8 kWh to 109.1 kWh, while in the M70 xDrive version, capacity rises from 108.6 kWh to 108.9 kWh.
