BYD is launching its own Kei Car for the Japanese market in 2026

BYD is going to be the first non-Japanese manufacturer to add a Kei Car to its vehicle lineup in the Japanese market. No one had done it before.

The Japanese market is not the most favourable for the success of electric vehicles, and proof of this is that in 2024 sales of this type of vehicle fell by 33 percent, from an already small base. Even so, BYD managed to increase its sales, but the Chinese manufacturer does not seem content with this important achievement.

According to some Japanese media reports, BYD is currently developing an electric Kei Car that will be sold exclusively in that market, with the aim of competing directly with the popular Nissan Sakura, which is currently the best-selling vehicle in Japan.

For anyone who doesn’t know it, the Nissan Sakura is a genuinely affordable Kei Car, priced below 16,000 euros at current exchange rates. Like any Kei Car, it stands out for its compact dimensions and highly limited technical specifications, since this type of vehicle is aimed exclusively at urban use.

Kei Cars have already become a hallmark of Japanese cities

That is why it fits a battery pack of just 20 kWh, with which it can cover around 180 km under the WLTP homologation cycle. Its dimensions, on the other hand, make it practically a toy car for Western audiences, measuring just 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and, admittedly, a considerable height of 1,655 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,495 mm.

These measurements meet the requirements of Japanese Kei Cars, very small urban vehicles designed to be efficient and easy to manoeuvre, which bring tax benefits and fit into the parking spaces of Japan’s crowded cities. It is also worth noting that the Nissan Sakura incorporates a heat pump for efficient cabin climate control and supports fast charging at a maximum power of 100 kW.

The secret to its success

One of the main reasons electric vehicles are not highly regarded by the Japanese public is the perception in this country of their high purchase price, even though over the long term they can reduce maintenance and energy costs. That is why, if BYD wants its future Kei Car to succeed, price will be a decisive factor.

With a selling price of around 15,000 euros at current exchange rates and specifications similar to those of the Nissan Sakura, BYD’s future Kei Car could carve out a place in the Japanese market, according to some analysts.

BYD’s offering in Japan

At present, the Chinese manufacturer sells four models in Japan: the Dolphin, the Atto 3, the Seal and the Sealion 7. However, the Dolphin, although it is a compact urban model, does not meet the dimensions of a Kei Car, which limits its popularity.

If everything goes according to plan, BYD’s future electric Kei Car will reach the Japanese market next year. Only time will tell whether it can put pressure on the local manufacturers that have dominated this segment of the market for decades, but that is precisely BYD’s intention.
