Citroën C4 Grand Picasso HDi and Peugeot 5008 HDi, comparison test (part I)

At Highmotor we have decided to temporarily put aside our sports car tests and dive headfirst into a segment that gains new fans every day: people carriers. Since we wanted to test the new Peugeot 5008, we took the chance to find out whether the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso had a rival in its own house or not.

The Peugeot 5008 is the second bet in the people carrier market after the 3008, breaking the agreement Citroën had with the brand, under which the chevron badge would monopolise this segment, where the C4 Picasso has so far roamed freely and been quite well received, a real heavyweight in the people carrier class. It shares that fame with its predecessor, the Citroën Xsara Picasso, which was on sale until recently.

But now that Peugeot is moving fully into the people carrier field, how much do the 5008 and the C4 Grand Picasso really compete, and are there many differences between them?…
These and other questions are what we will try to answer, and we hope this comparison will be useful if you are considering buying either of these seven-seat vehicles.

Engine and performancemotor_c4_picasso

As the

mechanical basis we have chosen the HDi diesel engines, but this is where the particulars begin, since we tested the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso with the 2.0 HDi of 138 CV,

while the current range only offers the 2.0 HDi of 150 CV as the most powerful option. Meanwhile, we tested the Peugeot 5008 with the 1.6 HDi engine of 110 CV, and it is available with the 150 CV HDi and also the 163 CV HDi.

In the case of the C4 Grand Picasso, the engine we tested is an old acquaintance of the Citroën range and is paired with the six-speed automated manual gearbox (CMP). This engine pulls our Citroën strongly, responding decisively as we approach 2,000 r.p.m., but we did not like the automatic gearbox, as its behaviour is not very smooth; you notice each gear engaging, and its speed of shifting could be improved. That said, the paddles make it easy to manage from the steering wheel, which has the typical fixed centre.

In the case of the Peugeot 5008 we tested the 1.6 HDi engine of 110 CVpeugeot_5008_motor (which is also available for the C4 Grand Picasso), an engine that, despite its modest power, moves the 5008 without too many problems and responds well as long as we work its six-speed manual gearbox, with which we can achieve very good consumption figures.

This engine can feel a little short on power if we regularly drive the car loaded or with all the occupants on board, but it is a very good option if our journeys are mainly city and country roads and we do not need much power, because then we will obtain a very good consumption of around 6.5 l/100 km on average.

Handling

The suspension of the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso is tuned to favour the comfort of its occupants, but this has a significant downside: the stability of the whole

shows some of the body roll typical of its size5008_c4_picasso, which is not present in the Peugeot 5008, which behaves more like a saloon car.

That said, both deliver a high level of interior comfort to their occupants, whether we are travelling on a motorway or on a rural road with frequent irregularities, where both prove quite effective. The Citroën C4 Grand Picasso offered the option of adjusting the height of the rear suspension to make loading easier, something the 5008 does not have.

Consumption

As far as consumption goes, the difference between the HDi engines is noticeable, since

the 2.0 HDi of 138 CV is already an old acquaintance, whereas the 1.6 HDi of 110 CV is more recent, and since it came with a manual rather than an automatic gearbox, it achieved better consumption figures.

In the case of the

Citroën C4 Grand Picasso, average consumption was around 7.2 l/100 km during the test, while on the motorway it was around 6 litres per 100 km. In the case of the Peugeot 5008citroen_c4, its motorway consumption was around 5.2 litres per 100 km, and over the test as a whole we obtained an average of 6.5 litres per 100 km.

For the 1.6 HDi engine of 110 CV we recommend it whenever we do not need to carry the car loaded or with all its occupants, or when our journeys are mainly urban or on country roads, because otherwise you will notice it lacks some strength. Meanwhile, for the C4 Grand Picasso we believe the 2.0 HDi engine of 150 CV with the six-speed manual gearbox is the more advisable choice, as it improves consumption figures thanks to being a more recent unit.

But beyond the small differences in how the two models handle and now that we have seen the advantages and disadvantages of their engines, in the second part of the test we will look at everything related to their design and, above all, their interiors, since the major differences between these two people carriers lie inside, even though the seating system is shared, for example.

As malas ficaram bem acomodadas.
