Citroën Grip Control system: to tackle any type of terrain
Citroën has just announced the different modes of its new Grip Control. This system is applied to front-wheel-drive SUVs to handle any terrain.

SUVs are gradually taking over the current market and this is reflected in their abundant production. These vehicles are characterised by their great versatility and by offering the possibility of accessing many different types of terrain. They achieve this thanks to the various driving modes offered by SUVs, something very common in this type of car. Now Citroën has decided to join this kind of system with the new Grip Control.
This new technology will be applied only on some models of the brand with the double chevron and will provide the capabilities needed to tackle practically any terrain. The novelty lies mainly in the fact that the Grip Control will be available on front-wheel-drive vehicles. Even so, these models have great off-road capabilities.
It is true that we are used to off-roaders being robust, large vehicles with a very capable all-wheel-drive system, but the French brand seeks to add a bit more versatility to those characteristics. It achieves this thanks to its newest models, such as the new C3 Aircross, C4 Cactus or the Berlingo, Jumpy and SpaceTourer in their most rural version.
Grip Control – a system we only find on certain trim levels of the previously mentioned models –
offers the possibility of optimising traction and grip in low-adhesion situations. At the same time, it acts on the front wheels, mainly when crossing mud or snow surfaces. However, Grip Control offers five modes. Standard, Sand, Mud, Snow and ESP off are the different options we can select.
Standard mode is applied in conditions where the road presents no difficulty, and comfort and smoothness are present during driving. However, the rest of the modes are designed for any type of situation. This system works by sending all possible torque to the wheel with the greatest grip, that is, it works like a limited-slip differential. Furthermore, this system remains active as long as we drive below 80 km/h.
Without a doubt, this new system gives Citroën’s new vehicles
a great ability to tackle different terrains. This allows us to use our French SUV for a multitude of tasks, whether moving around the city and on the road or through an area that is far more unusual for a vehicle of another segment.
