Citroën is bringing its new Berlingo to Vigo, powered by HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil)

The Citroën Berlingo can run on the new HVO fuel, which offers more sustainable mobility with fewer pollutant gas emissions.

The Vigo production centre has received a visit from the Citroën Berlingo that forms part of the HVO Aurora Trial. This project is taking a Citroën Berlingo and a Fiat Ducato across Europe to demonstrate the benefits of HVO, a renewable fuel produced from used cooking oil waste and animal fats. Through these demonstrations, the aim is to bring businesses and private individuals an effective alternative for reducing CO₂ emissions in everyday life.

Stellantis has strongly backed this fuel, and all of its commercial models are currently compatible with the use of these new, more sustainable fuels, which are efficient and practical for day-to-day use.

To achieve this compatibility, Stellantis worked with SP3H, a company specialising in smart sensors for smart fuels. For its part, the HVO Aurora Programme monitors and documentarily verifies the use of the sustainable fuel, estimating CO₂ emissions in real time. In this way it can be verified that these fuels are cleaner and can already be used in cars and commercial vehicles currently on the road.

In other words, this fuel allows existing fleets to use it without having to change vehicles or infrastructure.

The HVO Aurora Trial was created thanks to Stellantis’s Star*Up programme. This internal platform is responsible for raising and promoting innovative ideas proposed by employees. In the specific case of this project, it involves creating collaboration between teams, technology partners and industry to accelerate the transition towards responsible mobility. The Citroën Berlingo represents an advanced technical solution and a model of circular economy, as it reuses waste to generate energy.

The route of the European tour of these two Stellantis vehicles will include other key cities. Along the way, data will be collected, experiences shared and knowledge expanded about these fuels, which come from the circular economy, in order to achieve more sustainable mobility.

In addition to Stellantis commercial vehicles, many Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel vehicles on the road can use it without any modification whatsoever.
