Norway raises electric car market share to 97.6 percent in July: Toyota leads, while XPENG breaks into the podium.

In July, Norway further consolidated its position as the most electrified car market in the world in the passenger car segment. New car registrations reached 9,609 units last month, 0.5 percent more than in July 2025, of which 9,379 were fully electric vehicles, raising the market share of this type of vehicle to 97.6 percent, surpassing the record of 96.9 percent set in June.

In the cumulative figures for the first seven months of 2026, 83,012 passenger cars were registered, 2.4 percent fewer than in the same period of 2025. Nevertheless, electric cars grew 1.3 percent to reach 81,040 units, which confirms that the market decline is concentrated almost exclusively in models with combustion engines.

The brand ranking in July showed significant changes. Toyota took first place with 1,260 units, mainly thanks to the bZ4X, with 532 units sold that month, and the Urban Cruiser, with 437 units. Volkswagen held second place in the brand ranking, with the ID.4 as its main model, with 485 units. The surprise came from XPENG, which jumped to third place with 843 vehicles, an increase of 161 percent compared with July last year.

Other data to consider

Tesla, meanwhile, despite registering only 24 cars in July, comfortably maintains the year-to-date lead with a total of 14,413 vehicles (+3.9%). Behind it are Toyota (9,972) and Volkswagen (8,149). The Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) did not miss the opportunity to highlight the speed at which the competitive landscape in the country is being reshaped, even when total volume barely moves: “Toyota has gone from tenth to first place in one year, and XPENG from thirteenth to third”.

It should also be noted that the commercial segment shows a similar, though more moderate, trend. Electric vans accounted for 61.4 percent of registrations in July. In the truck segment, the market share already reaches 23 percent in the annual cumulative figures, after an increase of almost 70 percent in registrations compared with the first seven months of 2025. Even so, these vehicles still make up only 10.6 percent of the van fleet and 4.8 percent of the truck fleet.
