Electric vehicle registrations in the European Union continue to grow
Pure electric cars continue to consolidate their growth in Europe, while Tesla regains the momentum lost on the continent.
During May 2026, registrations of fully electric passenger cars in the European Union surpassed 200,000 units for the third consecutive month, reaching exactly 203,417 registrations. This represents a strong increase of 42.9 percent compared with the same month last year. This figure is especially significant considering that over the same period the total passenger car market grew by only 3.2 percent.
We can therefore say, without fear of being wrong, that the transition towards electric mobility in the European Union continues to gain ground consistently.

One of the main drivers of this surge in electric vehicle registrations has been Tesla. After a brief period of uncertainty, the American brand has returned strongly, taking 8 percent of all electric vehicles sold last month. According to ACEA data, in May 21,767 Tesla vehicles were registered in the European Union plus EFTA and the United Kingdom. A figure that represents a year-on-year increase of 152 percent. In the first five months of the year, the company has accumulated 89,180 units sold, 77 percent more than in the same period of 2025.
2026 is proving to be a good year for the electric vehicle in Europe
On the other hand, from January to May of this year, 950,521 electric passenger cars were registered in the European Union, equivalent to a market share of 20 percent. Everything indicates that the one-million-unit barrier will be surpassed this June, which is about to end. Within the European Union, three of the four major markets have recorded strong growth in electric car sales. Italy leads with 75.7 percent, France follows with 55.4 percent, while Germany stands at 40.9 percent. The other side of the coin is represented by Belgium, with a modest rise of 2.8 percent, and the Netherlands, which fell by 9.7 percent.

Today, Germany remains the largest electric vehicle market in Europe, with 59,969 registrations in May and growth of 39.3 percent. France follows, which experienced an impressive jump of 93 percent with 37,412 electric vehicles registered. Denmark, Italy, Belgium and Spain complete the main registration figures, all with positive growth.
