Ford sweeps the board with sales of its 1.0 Ecoboost Focus
A few months ago, the European division of the multinational Ford launched the Focus 1.0, a city car with a three-cylinder petrol engine available from 15,500 euros. In this short period of time, it has become one of the biggest sales successes on the old continent. Its secret? The performance of a petrol engine with diesel consumption.
According to Roelant de Waard, Ford stated that the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is a clear example of innovation and sales success, having reached the market at just the right moment, when customers are looking for a very efficient fuel that is still fun to drive, as the petrol engine is.
Whether that is true or not, people like the idea. The proof is in its sales over the last month. In April, more than 4,700 customers across Europe ordered a 1.0-litre EcoBoost Focus from the factory, accounting for 23% of all Ford Focus sales.
But there is something even more surprising. In Switzerland, the land of chocolate and gas-guzzling supercars, 60% of all orders for the Ford Focus were for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost. This was followed by orders from Greek customers at 37%, and Dutch customers at 35%.
Is the market changing? Do people want to say goodbye to diesel before they start buying electric vehicles? The only thing we know for certain is that low-consumption petrol engines appeal to the man on the street.
