Functional, simple and personal: the Fiat Tipo turns 30 years old while keeping its virtues

30 years ago Fiat unveiled the first generation of the Tipo, a segment C vehicle that, three decades later, retains the characteristics that define it

The A, B and C segments are where Fiat has always shown its finest work. Fiat has always shown, and continues to do so, its mastery in the production of smaller vehicles, vehicles whose launch has accompanied the social and economic evolution of many countries, especially Italy, its home market, by offering a more than interesting mobility option.

In the compact segment this tradition began with models such as the 1100 or the 128, followed by the popular Fiat 128 and the also cherished Ritmo, all of them predecessors of the Tipo, the current representative of the brand in the compact segment, which today marks 30 years since its commercial launch.

Since its unveiling three decades ago, the Tipo has changed considerably in its exterior appearance, although it fully retains the virtues that have characterised the model since its birth: functionality, simplicity and strong personality. From the outset, the Tipo’s designers aimed to offer an extremely easy-to-drive vehicle, with adequate performance and a high level of comfort and safety for its occupants.

The Fiat engineers who developed the 1988 Tipo did so on one of the first modular platforms introduced to the car market, which anticipated the family concept that the current generation expresses with its three different body styles. Other models would emerge from the chassis of that car from the Italian manufacturer, such as the Tempra (the equivalent of today’s Tipo saloon or three-box version) and the Tempra Station Wagon (predecessor of today’s estate version of the 2018 Tipo range).

On 26 January 1988 the Tipo debuted on the market with a range built from the combination of the five petrol and diesel engines available with the two trim and equipment levels offered. Even then, the Tipo displayed the values of functionality and simplicity that formed the basis of its very name.

The Tipo, living up to its name

In the car industry, “Type” models—an English word translated into Italian and Spanish as “Tipo”—are those taken as defining their range or segment in terms of equipment and main features. Fiat decided that the Tipo would , so to speak, “live up” to its name by defining a Tipo (the redundancy is intended) model whose distinctive features were deliberately left out to highlight the essential elements of its content and of the values the vehicle itself was to offer, without giving up on providing enormous value to its future owners as a mobility tool, thanks to its reliability and robustness, the enduring relevance of its design, the simplicity of its approach and the strong personality that the whole conveys in terms of elegance and purity of line.

The Tipo was born to improve its owners’ quality of life, allowing them to enjoy the freedom that driving provides both to the person behind the wheel and to the other passengers, with complete and generous standard equipment, without giving up on innovations such as those offered by the current generation of the model with the Uconnect system featuring a 7″ HD capacitive colour touchscreen.

Like the current model, the 1988 Tipo also innovated at the time by offering, for the first time in its segment, a modern and functional instrument cluster equipped with digital electronic instruments that anticipated the modern control panels of cars.

In developing the Tipo, Fiat put more than 2,000 people to work forming a dedicated multinational team that worked together for more than 3 years on the preparation and creation of the model, so that all its virtues would remain fully relevant in the current model, which the manufacturer has kept on the market 30 years later.
